Windows 7 and Libraries

We have a couple of issues relating to libraries, which I am sure have been covered elsewhere but I am getting rather confused!!

 

Firstly I have applied an ADM template which is supposed to disable libraries.

 

It has... to a point, but now I have no start menu links... which is not v useful at all!!

 

 

We also have a local logon on our teacher laptops, where we used to direct their home directory to D:\Teacher. With Windows 7 redirecting the homedir seems to do little/if anything at all as all the libraries allow them to save to C whether they can see it or not?!

 

 

How do you guys manage libraries for network users?

I'm currently trying to sort this out. Currently I have disabled libraries just using a registry fix. This is for 64 bit.

However I have also gone into each application and saved a file to the home drive for the default user profile. then cleared the file from any recent lists e.g Office 2010. This seems to work. If anyone knows a better way for this to happen please let me know.

I had a go disabling libraries and it seemed to stop me being able to search indexed locations or type mmc etc into the start menu, i had to type the full path for everything?!

 

You had any luck?

Im still having a problem Hiding Personal Folders, Libraries and so on, Iv used the above templates and to make them disaperar from explorer(works great). The problem im having is they still appear in Office when a user goes to save. Did anyone else get this?

Im wondering if its because im using a 64 bit windows, is there a 64bit adm for me to try.

Why are you all hiding them? They've never been a problem for us at all. If you're doing it because of the "Public" folder that's pretty easy to remove for everyone.

 

You shouldn't really mess around with Windows like this, you could break so much without realising it You're certainly putting yourself in an unsupported state with MS.

I agree, I don't restrict access either. If your permissions are configured correctly then you have nothing to worry about!

 

You can of course hide all your shares with a dollar sign (when required).

Best way to deal with Libraries is just to remove the Public folder locations and deploy the updated library-ms files via GPP (or mandatory profile if you have one)

 

We've done that with our test machines and works fine, safer bet than killing the feature completely imo

Been playing with this the last couple of weeks, ready for the summer, and touchwood it's been pretty plain sailing so far (apart from pinning stuff to the Start Menu, they made that awkward)

 

I've left the libraries as they are and removed the public location and stopped the whining about indexing using the BAT file and XML files from the second section here: Configuring Windows 7 For The Work Place.

 

The Network icon I got rid of with the ADM file here (Method 2): MyPCHealth

 

And the Favourites bit (that showed downloads, desktop etc.) I removed using the ADM from this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/47835-windows-7-gotchas-tips-fyi.html#post438279 (I think I hid Homegroup using a GPO setting rather than that custom ADM, though)

 

With all that set, Explorer is safe and inoffensive and the Libraries just redirect to the relevant My Pictures/My Music/etc. I've left them access to My Computer and restricted the C drive using policy.
