Jonny_sims Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 ever since we moved to server 2003 and active directroy we have used group policies to apply our proxy settings. This was working fine up untill xmas when our isp changed and we needed to change the proxy server address. This was done in group policy and i thought everything was fine. Untill i started to get staff complaining that they could not get onto the internet. Following further investigation i discovered that the old proxy settings were still in place. I performed a gpupdate /force and the new settings were applied. however when the pc was restarted the old settings were re-aplied. i have tried to put a regedit into the logon script, with no joy. What makes it even stranger is that this pc can be put onto another segment of the network it works without a hitch. is there something im missing?
mortstar Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Sounds like you have the old proxy settings still being applied by a GPO - perhaps the "Default Domain Policy". Have you tried a Group Policy Modelling within Group Policy Management? Try setting this up for the situation that the old proxy settings are applying for. This might throw up some legacy policy which has the old proxy settings taking precedence. If this works, you can remove the old-proxy settings from your GPO.
Jonny_sims Posted May 23, 2007 Author Posted May 23, 2007 no we only redirect the start menu and the my documents folder. we have also just started to redirect the favorites folder
Jonny_sims Posted May 23, 2007 Author Posted May 23, 2007 i have tried modeling and all the correct policies are being applied. i have also gone through all policies to check the proxy settings and all have the new ones in
Geoff Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 The GPMC modeling and results wizards can help you troubleshoot this.
djm968 Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Do you have more than one DC? This could be a replication issue and the policy change has not replicated to the other DC. Any errors in the event logs on the workstation? This could also be profile related, if you have implemented roaming profiles for staff.
thom Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I have the same issue, We changed our proxy through Group Policy and it was fine everywhere apart from in one computer room. I think it is to do with loopback policy which I set up in there to try and get a printer set up as default. I haven't looked into it much, I don't have the time at the moment and the room isn't used that much. The teachers just tell the students to run a "gpupdate /force" shortcut that i set up in a shared area. It will ask the students to log off and reboot but they can answer "no" and it will work OK.
Jonny_sims Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 Thanks for your help, djm968; yes i do have two dc's but they both have the same settings. there are no errors on the workstation i donot use full roaming profiles, we only roam ie favorites, my documents, and we force a standard start menu. Geoff; i have run the gpmc modeling and results wizard and the proxy settings do not show up, they are however in the gpo that is being applied.
apeo Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Do you have different policies applied to different parts of the network?
Jonny_sims Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 Apeo; we apply gpo's according to user group and not location; the only thing we do on a location basis is install software.
mattx Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 This may help you in the short term - its a bit of AutoIT script which when compiled will run IE but set your proxy settings before etc. Like I said its a work around until you sort out your GP issue. RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main", "First Home Page", "REG_SZ", "http://www.google.co.uk") RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main", "Start Page", "REG_SZ", "http://www.google.co.uk") RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings", "ProxyServer", "REG_SZ", "YOURPROXYSERVER:PORT") RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings", "Proxyenable", "REG_DWORD", "1") RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings", "ProxyOverride", "REG_SZ", "intranet") Run('C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe') This will need compiling [ if you want I'll do it if you send me your proxy details and mail it to you later today ]
Andie Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 We have a very similar setup as you, including redirected Favourites, but only one DC and we are running Learning network Manager. I changed our proxy settings by GPO and forced update a few weeks ago. It all appears to have worked, but our Internet servcie is so poor at the moment (one of the reasons we were trying another proxy) that staff may not be able to tell the difference. If I get time, I'll randomly check out a few workstations around the school to see if my proxy change really has worked. Also, (I'm only in work this afternoon) I'll look at where in the GPO heirarchy we have applied the proxy settings.
ChrisH Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 The proxy settings do seem to take the longest to change out of any setting it seems. Having come accross this in the past I just use a DNS name for the proxy and make the change in DNS. This works a lot better for me.
apeo Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Really is strange as you've said, i cant think why the workstation will be ok in another segment especially if you dont have gpos for different segments. Do you find that if you move the workstation to another segment its ok and then when you move it back it still has the problem?
Jonny_sims Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 thanks for all your help. yes when i move the laptop around then it works in one section then move it back and it stop working again. driving me round the bend now.
djm968 Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Is this only happening on Laptops? If so are how are the connected, wireless or wired?
apeo Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 As it doesnt sound like a policy issue i would guess its a network issue, if you are using Access Points for network connection i would check the access point. Perhaps reset it and reconfigure it. If you are wired then are all those wired to the same switch affected? If so check the switch.
Jonny_sims Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 its not just laptops, seams to be most xp machines. wireless yak!! :x
