desktop redirection folder renames itself to desktop

For some reason if i go back to my location where the desktop redirects to , its been renamed fron Staff, to desktop.

 

What might cause this. Certainly not somethink i experienceed at last school.

At a guess, the user accessing the desktop folder has write access to it, so windows has created a desktop.ini hidden file hiding the true name of the folder.

 

try from a command prompt:

attrib -h -s desktop.ini

del desktop.ini

jmcdermott is correct, it is to do with folder redirection and only happens after the user has access their home area. You can go into the user area and delete the hidden destop.ini which will rename the folder correctly. I have a batch file on each of our user storage server that runs as a scheduled task every night replacing the modified ini file with a blank. This was a real issue for us as staff have access to the pupil's home areas but couldn't see who the users were due to this renaming. Its not documents its happening to its the folder we have created for desktop redirection.

Only domain admins have full control or modify access.

 

When you say you replace with a blank, i'm assuming its a Desktop.ini file that when opened in notepad would be blank.

What I've got into the habit of doing for redirections that are shared (i.e. Start Menu, Shared Desktop) is to make the Share Read Only.

 

Logging on as domain admin on other workstations I had a Programs folder appear in the Start Menu for all the users, ended up with about 3 of them at one time.
