Will this work with my server...

I'm nearly out of storage on one of my servers, the finance dept are about to buy a new finance package which is going to occupy up to 30gb of space. I've managed to get them to agree in principal to the purchase of a new drive to accomodate it. It seems pointless to purchase a small drive when a big drive is not that much more expensive. So i was looking at this beasty...

Should be compatible - are you planning to add this to an existing array (you have 147GB discs so only 147GB would be used depending on the array) or create a new array (you'd want at least two for redundancy)?

At the moment it appears that the current drive setup is just striped with volumes created on it via the windows partition manager, I have an amount of unallocated space at the end of the set that I can use to extend any given volume, so yes, if the drive is compatible I believe I can slot it in and then either create a new volume, or extend an existing one to accomodate the new software.

 

If anyone sees a flaw in my thinking, let me know!

in thery it shuld work tho ive never tryed it. im just wondering why your using striped raid ? shurely it would be safer to have raid 5 set up or even 5+0.

If I read that right do you only have 4GB of RAM in your server?

 

If so does the software package you are looking at run using SQL server and if so you may wish to look at boosting up the RAM at that point to allow for SQLs RAM hungry needs.

 

Once you reach that point you are only a few steps away from getting a whole new server to run things off.....

i don't ask, it was set up initally by RM, and everytime we ask questions like that RM object and in a roundabout kind of way start talking about invalidating our service contract by making the machine an 'unsupportable configuration'

Ah, yes, it's actually got 8 in it. The 4 was the initial config and we swapped modules when we had RM in to look at a knackered tape drive. Well spotted
