Folder redirection works one logon but then not the next?

Just getting windows 7 up to speed with the hope to move the whole school over in the summer.

Ive currently got a windows 7 vm joined to the domain for testing.

 

Im having trouble redirecting the start menu and desktop. Ive applied the basic redirection via Group Policy.

 

The problem is that every other login it wont work.

 

So, I logon and the redirection has worked.

Log off

Log back on and no redirection

Log off

Log back on and again redirection has worked

rinse and repeat . . .

 

This is with the same user account . . .

 

any ideas whats going on?

dont think so. Ive not applied any updates to the OS.

This'll be the policy causing it:

 

Computer Config > Policies > Admin Templates > System > Logon - Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon - Enabled

 

Without this policy enabled, Folder Redirection will fail or not work as intended.

If that doesn't solve it, it is a bit of a mystery. Is the computer obtaining an IP OK? And is it wired or wireless?

Yeh it seems to be. Its a Virtual machine.

 

Im just testing W7 so have done the following.

 

Built a Windows 7 Virtual Machine

Joined it to the domain

Created a new OU in AD

Placed the VM into said OU

Created a test user in the same OU

Created a Policy linked to that OU

Blocked policy inheritance for that GPO

 

The only settings in the GPO that i have defined are a redirected start menu an desktop.

I now have the setting you mentioned above enabled.

 

I can log on once and it works fine.

Log on a 2nd time and it doesnt

Log on a 3rd time and it works..

and so on etc

Does the user account have a Start Menu linked in the profile - it could be that it's alternating between that and the redirected one? Total guess work now - our default to the profile Start Menu when the redirected one doesn't work.

Do you notice a quicker login tome when it doesn't redirect? I've got the same issue with a clean build and a dummy account, and I think it's profile related as the mandatory student profile works absolutely fine. Sadly the PC I was using had to be used elsewhere, so I can't go back to it to do further tests.

ok after looking at the logs ive found this

The test user is a member of the 'Students' group. This group has list, read and execute permissions on the ICONS folder

On the ICONS share, specify the following permissions:

 

Everyone - Read & Execute

CREATOR OWNER - Full Control

Authenticated Users - Read & Execute

SYSTEM - Full Control

Domain Admins - Full Control

Administrators - Full Control

Sorry ive been off with tonsillitis and only just picked back up on this.

 

It seemed to be a setting in the folder redirection GP that "Move the contents of the start menu to the new location" Once i unticked it, then then policy applied fine.

I also unticked "Grant the user exclusive rights to the start menu"

ok this is driving me round the bend now.

 

It WAS working fine.

But ive now been changing some user configuration settings and now neither Desktop or Start Menu redirection is working . . .

 

The redirection policy settings havnt changed

Does anyone know what I might have enabled in order to botch this up again?

I dont fancy going back and trying policy by policy

What do the event logs say on the local machine? And if you're playing with GPOs, it's recommended to run the gpupdate /force command.

Been running gpupdate / force on the test machine but the changes im making need the user to log off and log on again

Is the Domain Admin the owner of your redirected icon share?

Ive set the owner on the folder and subcontainers to domain admin but still nothing.

And I presume the Sharing and Security tabs are correct on the share?

Yup, like i say I had it working before I started applying different policys.

So im guessing theres a policy somewhere Ive enabled that i probably shouldnt have. Just need to find the F£cK3R

Not sure it is directly relevant, but it useful in otherways.

 

Even if they don't solve your problem, it will almost certainly help you avoid others later on. Notice that at least two MS Support professional blogs are recommending these hotfixes regardless of whether problems presented match specific symptoms reported by individuals.

 

(read the standard warnings from MS about installing these hotfixes, and proceed at your own risk)

thanks - Installed all the hotfixes but it hasnt changed anything.

 

Ive figured out that instead of picking up the folder redirection, its reverting to the desktop from the mandatory profile.

Hello all,

 

I too am experiencing this, but I may be able to add some specifics about what is happening.

We are entirely a 2008 R2 enterprise site with all windows 7 clients.

Staff NEVER get this issue - but students do - always at random - no specific machine, no specific user.

The only difference that I can see is that staff sync their documents to be able to use them offline where as students don't.

The other thing is that if we re-image an affected machine it resolves the problem.

Generally this happens on laptops over wireless, but is starting to happen on desktop machines more frequently.

 

We have also gone down the route of waiting for network at startup and deleting all profiles older than 1 day with no avail.

This problem does worsen over a period of time so does suggest some kind of profile / registry issue. Perhaps deleting the profile doesn't delete the associated registry key?

I also don't think it's a permissions issue - it would either work or it wouldn't if that was the case!
