Just another quick question guys,

 

What software do you use to inventory your network (pc's). That is if you use any?

 

It would be good if the software would record the serial numbers of pc's and export to a access db or excel.

We're using Sysaid from Ilient at the moment (http://www.ilient.com). It does inventory management, work/maintenance tracking and web-based fault reporting as well. I've been using it for about 9 months now and haven't had any problems (apart from persuading staff to use the fault reporting rather than leaving illegible post-its all over my desk :D )

 

You have to deploy a small client app to each PC, but it comes with a program to push this out over the network, so no legwork involved. It records serial nos, installed software, OS etc and will do exports to CSV files.

 

It's free to use for up to 100 machines and 2 admin accounts, which is fine for us but I guess won't suit everyone. It can run on its own internal database, which suited me as I haven't got an SQL server running at the moment.

Am looking into setting up a dedicated OCS Inventory server over the weekend (probably an ubuntu system as we don't have a spare windows server license).

 

I've never done this before, is it difficult to set up? I'm doing it as an experiment, if it works (and impresses my network manager) it'll probably end up implemented in a number of other primary schools.

 

Also, how much does it record? Does it do serial numbers, windows license keys etc? What other useful info does it record other then what hardware is in the machine and the software applications installed? What kind of useful graphs does it display in the web interface?

We've had Sysaid here for over a year and agree completely with ChrisO. It's free, easy to use and it works, but we have the same problem with the staff not using it. They say 'I don't know my password/how to use it', but if they would only click the 'How to report an IT fault' icon on the staff desktop it might help.

It's ok. Only trouble I had was with the clients installing the agent.

Don't forget GLPI.

 

Some people use both of these together don't they? Why? My OCS inventory install didn't go so well when I tried (due to the server hardware, not the software) so I've found another machine to install it on. Since then I have had more time to plan and am wondering what advantages GLPI has over OCS?

Thanks. Looking at that, I don't think it'll be necessary for a primary school. OCS-NG should suffice :D.
