I might buy one for personal use, at school we have stacks of old mini-ITX machines that were used as thin clients and now retired as part of our renewals. These would make ideal devices for programming - so if/when the ICT dept want to do this it would be just as easy to supply an old mini-ITX machine over an RPi.

I might look at RPi as a thin client replacement esp when a PoE option is available.

Spoke to Dos_box about this on Friday, he's thinking about running some of the old arcade emulators on it and sticking the RasPi either behind the monitor or inside the keyboard.

I work in desktop VDI so im looking to build a Citrix thin client with mine

Mounting them in ethernet sockets like the JackPC would be a good idea.

I'm in an afterschool club building one of these: http://reprap.org/wiki/RepRap (although we blew most of the electronics in it last week, oops)

We could probably use it to build jackPC style cases.

No, I'm planning on buying one and putting Debian on it :-) It's interesting that most of the discussion I've seen around the Raspberry Pi so far has been by people who have some kind of specific plan for it - thin client, embedded controller, etc. Anyone have any plans on how to use the Raspberry Pi in a classroom setting?

Well, I think this is where you get to make your mark, if any of you have any ideas please post them up .I've already suggested to ZH that we may need an ideas/managing RP forum, so please be patient for a relevant forum to become available.

I'm thinking maybe some kind of kit to allow pupils to make thir own computer - design the case, pick where the I/O ports go, etc. You'd probably wind up with something similar to a Commodore 64 - keyboard on top, electronics underneath, ports around the edge. It should make for a good Design & Technology project. You could allow the pupils just enough freedom for them to feel they are actually making something but constraits would be in place to avoid things going completly haywire. They could probably customise the case decoration and how the ports are arranged around the sides - if you made those sections out of craft-knife cuttable wood or plastic they could cut holes and insert I/O ports themselves. You'd just need to supply keyboards and basic cases and a bunch of cables to lead out the connections from the Raspberry Pi board itself to the edges of the case.

Only prob i see with that is ive never seen any specs for sound on it

Personally I diskike the phrase 'in the classroom' as I think this goes against the philosophy behind these. They need to be allocated as personal devices to the students who can then take them home and fiddle. The classroom should be about inspiring students with ideas and empowering them to go off and play and learn, bringing them back in to show off stuff they've done.

I was thinking something similar, mounting it onto the back of a cheap 14" tv (about £100) and sticking it in the back of the car to SHUT MY BLOODY KIDS UP!

The Raspberry Pi should be available to buy sometime between 21/02/2012 and 29/02/2012 according to the latest update...

 

I’ve got some bad and good news about manufacturing. The bad news is that it’s taking a little longer than we’d hoped, because the factory had some trouble sourcing a specific component. The quartz crystal package we had chosen when we thought we were manufacturing in the UK is readily available over here in Europe, and was the cheapest we could find; but it turns out that in China, that crystal package has been overtaken in price and size by a smaller, cheaper one, so the one we’d designed for has been a bit hard to find. The factory has sourced crystals now, so we’re all go. The good news is that this finally means we have a date for the first batch: the boards will be finished on February 20. Eben and I may be going to China to make sure that the boards can be brought up properly for that date if necessary. We’ll be airfreighting them to the UK immediately, so you should be able to buy them before the end of the month.

 

There’s another big piece of news today. We’ve been leaning (gently and charmingly) on Broadcom, who make BCM2835, the SoC at the heart of the Raspberry Pi, to produce an abbreviated datasheet describing the ARM peripherals in the chip. If you’re a casual user, this won’t be of much interest to you, but if you’re wanting to port your own operating system or just want to understand our Linux kernel sources, this is the document for you.
