Bernina Artista 640 Computerised Sewing Machine?

Yes, rather a long shot but......

 

Our Textiles Dept would like to purchase one of these and we're just doing the "does it suck or not?" IT due diligence. Looking through the specs I see "Dongle", which is never a good start.

 

Have you got one of these? Has your DT / Textiles Dept? What're they like?

My missus is a textiles teacher. Their school has 3 janome memory craft 350e. Their reasons for choosing these machines were the simplicity of interface on the sewing machine- easy to follow and therefore students to use. The customiser software is massively cheaper than any others at the time they looked and again straight forward to use. The students put their own designs onto a memory card which then plugs into the machine. They have also networked the software which some softwares don't allow. They can't do really intricate designs but they use it successfully at gcse and sixth form.

Can't tell you anything about the Bernina-

We have a Bernina sewing machine and yup its got a dongle, its run from a standalone XP laptop with the dongle cabled tied to the air vent on it as that was the best way of sorting it out. I've yet to see it used infact I bet the laptop has probably died like most of the ones from that era....

Absolutely no idea I am afraid and I gave the manual to the dept it belong to as it was more than just how to install the software so felt I should give them it.
