Screencast Software - Recommendations please ..

Right, so I'm looking at creating some basic screencasts both for things in school for the staff to help them choose the right printer and that sort of thing, but also for using a tutorials on my own website for my clients and what not.

 

Now, doing a quick seach, I've come across Screencast-O-Matic - Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing. which pretty much seems to be what I want, but I thought I'd put the thing out there for recommendations for bits of software people currently use.

 

Most of the instructionals for my own stuff will be done on a Mac, where as school tutorials will be done no a PC, so ideally something that runs on many different environments would be great. I'm not too bothered if there's a charge for the software either, so long as it's reasonable.

We bought Camtasia a while back but I've had no use for it - but it's available for both Mac and PC and seems pretty good. Free trial.

If you are doing it on a Mac then you can use Real Player to record screen casts (not 100% sure about using the same software on PC though)

For PC I've always used CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software

You realise Quicktime (as of Snow Leopard) allows you to record screen sessions, right? (File > New Screen Recording)

 

And this works fine for RDP windows as well?

 

From Lion onwards, you can define regions of the screen to capture.

Adobe Captivate - not free but it will annotate and stuff for you, meaning you can create videos really quickly. If you want to be cheeky there is a 30 day free trial on the website.

 

We are looking to use it instead of screenshots for OCR work.
