north-ict Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Well i am coming to that time where my mobile phone contract is about to come up for renewal. I have had my trusty HD2 for 2 years. Read an article about the S3 for february 2012? Just wanted to know if anyone else has read or heard rumours about this. I dont mind waiting a few months, Im just torn between the 4S and S2 and nexus prime and would be really gutted if the S3 came out in feb and i get the S2. Or is there any new phones on the horizon for early 2012? arghhhhhh......
jedmondson Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I was looking to get a HTC Desire S when someone buys my Blackberry off me.
mwbutler Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 All I know is the phone is going to be released in the 1st haf of next year (rumours say April- June) and the phone is going to be awesome! - 4.5" super AMOLED screen - quad core processor @ 1.5ghz - graphical performance x5 better than S2 using Nvidia Tegra chip - NFC and 4g - Probably 12mp camera - Rumoured 2gb RAM and so on. Samsung fixed the lag issues in the S2 (Mum has it and I have the S1) and that is a great phone. I don't think you would be disappointed if you got the S2 instead, well unless you want the latest and greatest like me
north-ict Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Yea i heard similar rumours so its looking quite appealing but i heard it was a 2ghz processor. But thats rumours for you.
Oaktech Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 i shall be getting the new motorola razr when my contract is up in april. i have a defy atm, i'm not using it's waterproof features any more and i really want it's kevlar contruction and gorilla glass screen!
Pottsey Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 - graphical performance x5 better than S2 using Nvidia Tegra chip That doesn’t seem correct. Tegra 3 isn’t x5 faster graphically then S2 is it? Surly it would have to be something like an PowerVR MP SGX chip of some sorts to hit those speeds.

Arthur Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Tegra 3 isn’t 5x faster graphically then S2 is it? Tegra 3 is around 2-3 times faster than Tegra 2 according to these benchmarks.
LosOjos Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Of course having a quad core 1.6Ghz phone sounds awesome, but what's the battery power like? Unless I've missed something, battery technology hasn't had any major improvements lately (not in commercially viable products anyway) and I imagine that will chew through the battery in no time...
Pottsey Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Some of the new devices come with an extra low powered core. The idea being to use the low powered core most of the time and only switch to dual/quad when needed. No idea if it works in practise.
Hightower Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Also, I thought most battery is used by powering the screen, and with the work that seems to be put into screen development perhaps that's where the big energy saving comes in? Just a thought though, haven't seen anything like this anywhere.
plexer Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Damn just rang voda and got my upgrade date and it's June 2012 Ben

I *believe* that AMOLED screens are the most energy efficient right now, but I may well be wrong...
Hightower Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I *believe* that AMOLED screens are the most energy efficient right now, but I may well be wrong... Yep, but doesn't the screen on an S2 get called something like a Super AMOLED Plus - probably many different AMOLED screens out there, which are most probably being improved all the time, especially in the power consumption department.

Yeah the S2 has a super amoled Plus screen and runs at 800x420 resolution. No idea what the S1 has, but the Galaxy Nexus has a super amoled screen ( No plus ) running and 1280x720 reso. I've heard the S3 will bring the best from both of the phones, so a Super amoled plus screen running at 1280x720
