Connector for external bay/fdd/cdrom/dvd for use with a laptop.

I would agree looks like a Dell, similar to one I had with an old Dell latitude

Is that one of those magical drives from the likes of "24" where any device can be plugged in to any other device and where an entire hard drive can be downloaded in seconds!?

Sometimes the manfacturers one is placed over the industry standard adapter but does that one look like it's solder to the drive pcb?

If it is then you'll have to replace it like for like.

its an ATAPI connector, some laptops have specific connectors which use an adapter plate. but the CD/DVD-ROM side is generally a ATAPI, unless its a new SATA drive

That connection is standard on laptops. As others have stated, it's a slim IDE connection for optical drives. New laptops of course have SATA connections these days ;)

It literally is a case of unscrewing it, sliding it out and sliding a new drive in place.
