Hi there,

I have a school that is moving from a workgroup over to a domain setup. They have assessment data stored within a specific folder on the workgroup that both networks need access to.

What would you advise to ensure that the data within this folder is accessible to both networks until the transition is complete?

Many thanks

What about putting it on the domain but with access right for the specific workgroup users to access and then deploy a shortcut?

just an idea, not a nice clean one though

another idea is I do have a script (on my work PC) which asks for a username and password and maps drives and other domain resources to a workgroup machine with their domain username and passwords, it is a simple batch file, I can send it to you tomorrow if that is of use?

could I map a drive for the domain users to a workgroup folder?

You could do it with a logon script like this

NET USE \\server\share /u:username password
NET USE Z: \\server\share

That will specify credentials to the share map the Z drive to the share.

to elaborate here is the batch file i use

@echo off

REM ------------------

net use \\SERVER /Delete
net use \\SERVER /Delete
net use \\SERVER /Delete

Net use n: /delete
net use o: /delete
Net use m: /delete
net use s: /delete

REM prompts for and stores username and password variable REM -----------------------------------------------------
cls
echo Enter your login name for the Managed Network
set /p loginname=
cls
echo Enter your Managed network password
set /p ntcpassword=

REM establishes IPC connection to servers, avoids login prompts later in script REM

REM ---------------------------
net use n: \\SERVER NAME\HomeFolderDIR$\%loginname%
net use o: \\\SERVER NAME\SHARE$

REM reminds students to wait......
REM ------------------------------
cls
echo PLEASE WAIT - your printer access is now being configured.
echo.
echo This can take up to 3 minutes.
echo.
echo Once complete, this window will close.

REM printers installed here
REM please note - the "ping" command is used as a "cheat" to force REM the batch file to pause between installing each printer. If REM it is not there the printers install too quickly and the batch REM file intermittently returns errors.

this comes in very useful if you are promoting for students to bring in their own windows devices, and is a nice simple batch file. And as this thread suggests it allows you to connect non domain machines to domain resources without leaving a password in plain text somewhere
