vmware esx4.0 HA issues

I've 3 hosts and for a while now vsphere has been complaining about HA. I've ignored the issue as I don't think it that HA is useful to me anyway. I originally only had 2 host matched (same hardware ram etc) in the cluster and they were HA'ed fine. later on I had older server added to the cluster (I wanted it for testing and building unimportant VMs) The engineer though made it part of the HA group as well as the cluster (I don't know if you have to). anyhow I was willing to ignore the HA red exclamation points as it didn't seem to be an issue. But today I want to add a new server and I can't start it, I get the message "insufficient resources to satisfy configured failover level" is this because I really don't have the resources or because the ha is in error?

 

Also can I play with the HA settings without causing the VMs to shutdown or error?

 

I'd like to create a working HA for my first 2 hosts only and have the 3 host part of the cluster but have no HA.

Yep, I've found you sometimes need to disable HA on a cluster and then reenable it to get it to behave.

Try right-clicking each host and choosing reconfigure for HA.

 

You can easily remove the host from the cluster by going into maintance mode and then dragging it out of the cluster.

thanks, worked great. I had to do it from vmhost 1 to 3 as 3 wouldn't do it at first.
