Wisdom teeth out

Hey guys and girls.

 

My girlfriend is having 2 wisdom teeth out this week and she is getting nervous about it. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice to pass onto her regarding the whole experience. Is it as bad as people make out.

I had a top one removed and it wasnt that bad. I'm a wimp!! I made a big deal at the time but in hindsight it wasnt that bad.

 

The only thing i will say is to take care of the extraction sites afterwards. Loosing the blood clot can lead to dry socket and thats where the problems start.

Both ICT coord and Headteacher have had bottom wisdom teeth out lately and they tell me the actual extraction was fine - no pain. THe next day was OK as well but it was quite painful on day 2, so be aware and take painkillers early! As littlemiss says, taking care of the site of the extraction is the main thing

Had 1 out a couple of years ago. For me personally it wasn't when taking it out that was the issue, it was more that the injection to numb the area led me to have have a numb throat and I felt like I had to concentrate to swallow. I had swelling in my face for about 5 days but noone else I have spoken to had that effect. Had to eat softfoods/soup etc for a few days but other than that she should be fine.

 

I think it's probably the thought of it more than the actual removal.

I had 4 out all in one go. Was in the chair for about 3 hours. You cannot drive afterwards for a few days.

I had 4 out in one go. The actual extraction was fine, if lengthy.

 

I did have a lot of bruising on my face afterwards (get arnica ointment in) and felt pretty groggy for the next week. Don't expect to be chewing food for a two or three days either - mush is good!

I too was one of the ones who had all 4 out at the same time! Make sure you take care of the extraction site, I had dry socket on a tooth extraction followed by an infection of the jaw (mainly due to the fact that the blood clot came out and a small piece of food got lodged in the extraction site and rotted in there as I couldn't get it out, had to have the dentist remove the food piece). Jaw infection = not fun, still suffering now but not as bad as it was in September!

My wisdom teeth were so inflamed and infected that after having three out in one go, the pain was less than before. A bit like when you manage to get a painful splinter out.

I had to have both my upper ones removed in hospital under a general anesthetic ... I was signed off work for two weeks to recover.

 

I looked like an obese hamster for the first 4 or 5 days! however, I went back to work after just one week.

You might want to be selective when you pass these stories on to your girlfriend

I had one of my bottom ones out under general last year (I think I was given wo days off, one for recovery one for the op). Like everyone else has said, I was very groggy for the first day or so. I also found that the pain killers they'd prescribed me were giving me headaches, so I stopped taking them as quickly as I could.

 

With the actual removal of th etooth, I had no problems afterwards, but make sure you follow the advice given to you about swilling it out with salt water and using gauze etc.

2 of mine have come through ( i think ok , im not a dentist though ! )

 

My top left one gave me a cronic headache on saturday , it finally pierced through on sunday and headaches now gone ! , is coming out a bit sidewards though ! so will eventually get the dentist to give it a yank !

Just had my last wisdom tooth out by local anasthetic. It was badly decayed and partially erupted with most below the gum. I was in agony for nine months whilst I waited for a hospital appointment as my own dentist would not touch it. The extraction was no bother at all. The injections numbed the pain entirely. The dentist then cut the tooth into four pieces by drilling and easily lifted out all four roots. Completely painless. Tell you girlfriend not to worry. Modern techniques are a great improvement on my experience of the other three being removed forty years ago!
