Guys and gals, I wondered if you would be able to please advise on a sensible quota size limit for staff (teacher) home folders.

Currently looking into offsite backup solutions and want to restrict the amount of data (mostly rubbish), staff are saving to their home folders. I really need to know what limits other people set. I've noticed some staff folders at one site are nearing 12GB in size.

Thanks :)

We have a nice big SAN and backup to large portable HDs so it is not that much of an issue. These same docs folders are synced to their Windows 7 laptops too so they have easy and quick access to them wherever.

Jeeezz, 80Gb of err rubbish, pictures, games, music etc. What the heck.

We limit staff and students to a max of 1gb on their staff areas, although the Staff/Shared area is a max of 240Gb, last year was 120Gb, and with only 20Gb free now, goodness knows what 100Gb of rubbish we have accumulated on the server in a year.

1Gb as standard and 4Gb for Heavy users (Head, business manager, heads pa ect) All teachers have laptops so can keep their videos ect on that. Some use portable HDDs too.

We do have quite a bloated common area too but it's used to give access to materials for students. We have a Virtual pigeon hole where students can save work for submission and not viewable by other students. However some staff use this area as a dumping ground.

Every summer both areas are cleared out. Basically I create new ones for the new academic year and for half a term allow read only access to the old areas so they can copy across what they need. This helps reduce bloat.

We're just in the process of implementing quotas of 10GB for staff here. We're in the 'reporting' stage of it at the moment, and once we've got those staff with over that amount down below it, we'll switch on enforced quotas.

A scan the other day turned up that of the 694GB of staff data on the server, 245GB is images, 69GB is music (although, this is down from the last scan where it was 110GB), 153GB is video and the remainder is work basically.

The most difficult part is getting the users under the quota limit you wish to set.

Not many like to spring clean even stuff they no longer need!

You folks are ace, thanks for the prompt response too. I'm going to enforce 2GB and 4GB limit depending on the member of staff (ICT coordinator, dept head, head). Staff share will be limited too (yet to be decided).

I also plan to create another area where staff can dump less important data - the idea being this will be excluded from the business continuity proposal.

Thanks again :)
