pooley Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 OK here goes. I have a problem where pupils are unable to print from Microsoft Publisher. Admin logins will allow it to print with no problem. But Pupils (Domain Users) get the message "please choose another pinter. Publisher cannot find the printer "\\ppserver\samsung CLP-5Series" for this publication. To select a different printer, click ok. etc etc. Click ok, the only printer they can select is the samsung - but it just doesnt print. All other software prints no problem - office -paintshop pro etc. Any help would be appreciated. orkstations authenticate onto a 2k3 AD domain

Publisher saves the printer information in the file so it baulks/ checks for every time you open a publication on a different machine - is the printer not immediately accessible then? There is an issue with publisher i've found in the past - is it something to set in the printer pproperties??
ChrisH Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Publisher is seems very dependant on the printer. I have seen it freeze and crash many times just because it couldnt find the default printer when you open it.

ChrisH Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 We still use publisher and MSpaint!!!! I have tried to attract them away with GIMP last year bit it was a bit to daunting for them so we now have Fireworks and im about to deploy paint.net.
Frazer Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Have you tried, file -> print setup, reselecting the current printer, ok? Publisher seems to associate itself with the printer when you first create the publication. Once you tell the publisher document to associate the new printer with the publication it should work - this problem seems to dissapear for administrators! (someone try out my access reports problem! )

If you are using version 2002 or higher and your print server is on W2K server or higher you need to make sure the share name for the printer is the same as the printer name. ie if it is on server PRTSVR and called COMP1PRT then the share name also needs to be COMP1PRT so it appears //PRTSVR/COMP1PRT. If the name is BrotherComp1Printer but the share name is COMP1PRT then it will go pear-shaped. I can't find the KB article anymore (page not found ... thanks M$) but that is the problem and solution we had to stick in place last year.

That explains it I had dashes in my print share names when I first went to 2003 (server), that doesn't work either. Office 2003 is such a relief.
