Hi all,

I hope someone can help, we have tried everything!

We are running a Windows 2003 Server network with XP Pro Clients.

When some users login we get the following error message:-

USER ENVIRONMENT - Windows cannot find a server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with a local profile, etc, etc,.

We have tried giving full permissions to users with no effect.

Some people get the error then after a few attempts it loads fine....while others don't load properly ever.

We have also tried giving ownership to the folder as well.

This problem is on XP and 2000 and accross laptops and desktops.

This seems to be affecting more and more people throughout our campus as the days pass!

Many Thanks

Ian

I would think one the following should fix your problems:

1.) Disable offline files. ( Tools, -> Folder Options, -> Offline Files)

2.) If you use cisco switches... maybe some others, only know cisco ships by default with spanning tree on.. This can cause up to a 45 second delay from boot to acquired ip. So if this is the case have ur students not turn the computer on and immediately start hammering login as soon as it pops up, or set the ports on ur lab switches to portfast. I will post a warning from cisco on using portfast:

[Caution: Never use the PortFast feature on switch ports that connect to other switches, hubs, or routers. These connections can cause physical loops, and spanning tree must go through the full initialization procedure in these situations. A spanning tree loop can bring your network down. If you turn on PortFast for a port that is part of a physical loop, there can be a window of time when packets are continuously forwarded (and can even multiply) in such a way that the network cannot recover. ] posted from http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/12.html

Have you looked into the AD to see if the path is still there ?

Thanks for all the tips. We tested one profile by renaming the original folder, creating a new folder with the original name, logging in then out and then dragging the original settings folders into the new one, except Ntuser. This seemed to work on that particular user, although it should work on everyones that we have issues with.

hi

I had a similar problem, My problem turned out being an incorrect software intallation (through managed software).

I had a software installation through Group Policy which was not working correctly this was causing machines trouble.

Check your software installs through Group Polices

make sure that the profile root folder name is the same as the actual folder name!!

eg: \\myserver\staff\profiles\teacher1 the folder should be called teacher1 not 'teacher 1' or 'teacher-1'

I had a problem that stumped me for ages and then i found that the folder name in the profile root had a hyphen in the username and the actual folder didnt, removed the hyphen and bang it worked
