Just had a look at a brand new switch (DES-3550) we have and there is an option for "Loopback Detection". Here is a screenshot: http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h190/BadBoyVTEC/loopbackscreen.jpg Any ideas on what settings should be used?

It would be better to have it all in separate cabs IMO as it is always easier to troubleshoot and looks neater. This is how we also have our rooms.

The possibility is there. There was a class of what looked like naughty kids in the room affected. Getting the teacher to shout at them didn't make any of them own up though lol. We have also had dodgey NIC's but I think this points more towards the switch/fibre module. We have a new module on order just in case anyway.

Just had a complete loss of all network due to what looked like a loopback at first. Looked at our DES-6500 stack and we had 100% utilization so proceeded to unplug each fibre plug one by one until we found out what room was the problem. Reset our router and with that room unplugged everything else worked fine. After investigation in that room we couldn't find any loopbacks or any obvious problems. Connected it back up and reset all the computers and the switch in that room and now everything works fine. Could be a problem with that module in the DES-6500 because one of the link lights wasn't lighting up when plugged into a particular port but worked on another port. Any ideas anyone?

Ghost will slow down to the slowest device on your network ie a printer 10mb. We unplugged all our printers here this summer for our imaging and this allows a decent speed when it works. We have diffenrt images for different rooms and use unicast option. Only problem with this option is that if one pc fails it cancels the whole lot in that session. Create differnt sessions for different rooms and stagger them all so they are not all at the same time. If you fail this make a dedicated ghosting server and carry it to each room then dissconnect the switch from the rest of the network for each differnt section of your network. It has taken us the last couple of weeks to figure this strategy out and now we are nearly complete.

Just to let you know where we are up to now: Ever since the D-link management team have got involved their customer service has been A* I keep on getting phone calls all of the time to see how we are getting on with our switches, and they even came down to see how the noise problem was affecting us. They recommended that we connect 2 DGS-1024D's together and this will decrease the noise. They assured me that our earlier problems were a one off, and everything is resolved now.

DVD's not displaying on interactive whiteboards (IWBs)

yes this happens on laptops. Just switch the display completely to the projector and this sorts out the issue. Only problem is that then the display doesn't show on the l;aptop. Do this by using the FN (function) key and usually on the numbers a little picture of a computer screen. Yoyu may have to do this a few times. -
Ok to bring this topic back to life with my latest update to this story. Just this morning I went to D-Link House as I was invited to do so by the manager. Very nice and friendly people. Was shown one of the switches we had returned that they had replaced all the fans on. The sound level was only slightly improved. However, as compensation for our troubles they gave us a free dgs-3048 gigabit switch. This is still just as loud however I feel that this has been a wasted exercise as they still couldn't guarentee the silence of future switches. The problem with just changing the fans to quieter ones is that the current fans spin at 8800 rpm and the only quiet ones are around 3-4000 rpm. We are now going to try Dell for our next Gig switch so I will let you guys know how that goes. Alex

I don't know that but I would personally try buying an add on sata card (if its those type of hdd's) and installing that as a first port of call, so you can limit it down to saying either its the hard drives or the motherboard. As a coincidence it may well be the hard drives.

download and burn ultimate boot cd and boot from that. it has many diagnostic tools on it including hard drive diag programs. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com

Try getting rid of as much crap as possible. IE non existant user accounts and emails accounts and stuff you download to decrease the amount it needs to backup as we were finding our backup needing multiple tapes until we has a 'clearout'.
