Wireless off when network cable plugged in

Hi all. i will try to explain this to the best i can.

 

we are currently using laptop in the classroom. But insted of using wireless we are plugging them in to a switch. (32 laptop via a wireless ap is just too slow with all the Controlled Assessments going on currently here. (all 3 it rooms are busy all lessons nearly))

 

Is there a script or something we could do to turn the wireless off? We are having issues with our routing table as its hitting the limit.

May or may not be a help, but we have some HP Compaqs and such a setting is in the BIOS. This may be specific to HP brand laptops though.

These are stone laptops. My old acer laptop had a setting though epower that could do that.

Maybe a start looks like some form of script will be required to check the state of the wired card and disable the wireless though tbh.

Is there a keyboard combo that switches the wireless no/off such as Fn/F2?

 

If so you could probably use a script tool like AutoIt or similar to send the key strokes...

There are commercial products to do exactly what you want -Wireless AutoSwitch - BridgeChecker and probably a load more..

 

Cheaper to disable the wireless device though..

Most newer laptops/netbooks have a wireless hotkey so you can toggle wireless on/off.

 

Older laptops/netbooks have a physical switch on the side you can use.

 

As far as I am aware, I don't think you can disable devices via MMC > Device Manager remotely, even on Windows 7.
