A bunch of our boarding students seem to have trouble updating their iDevices to iOS5. I just tested my wife's iPad2 (she also teaches here) and sure enough, the connection seems to time out. I had no issue connecting from home. Is there a specific port that needs to opened that I am unaware of? I can get to the iTunes store fine however I did a quick test to see if I can download a regular (free) educational app and I was timed out there as well.

Port 443 is unblocked.

Any ideas?

Dangerous stuff here chaps, we lost our 64Gb iPad 1 to IOS5.0 updating...

It bricked after a failed download and after many hours of recovery attempts it went back to the Apple store where they took it out the back came back 10 mins later and announced that it had been "Damaged" and wanted £280 + VAT to repair it!

Eventually after a lot of discussions between staff and the store manager they agreed to exchange it for a Refurbished iPad 1 for £200 inc VAT

We are still oblivious to the real cause of the Bricking of this device but one thing is for sure it was working perfectly before the IOS5 update attempt!

We also have issues updating, running and downloading some apps on our iPAD's but work fine whilst connected to a PC and syncing that way.

We use a Smoothwall UTM and have our wireless VLAN pretty secure, so will be looking at it during the half term to let things like the iPAD store go through.

We filter with Sophos. I added all the sites suggested via Apple to our unfiltered list however, unless I am missing one. I also unblocked the ports Apple suggested. Still get the time out. I am going to give myself unfettered access through my firewall to see if I can narrow it down to my Cisco ASA device....or the Sophos device.

Quick update. Added my IP to the 'all clear' list in my Cisco ASA device and the download is working fine. So it's definitely a port issue. But what port? I unblocked: 3689, 5297, 5298 5353, 8000-8999 and 42000-42999 as suggested by the Apple site. Did I miss one?

For those talking about problems with bricking and not getting it sorted after going through DFU, etc ... the message I have had about it is that if there is a hardware fault then yes, this can happen and nowt you can do about it other than get a repair done. Things that can cause the problem can include where the device has overheated at some point, been dropped (even if the glass is repaired other damage may have occurred) and so on. It is something that worries me as my iPhone has overheated once and cut out completely (car, hot day, bright sun, left on passenger seat) so I know it is a risk.
