3s-gtech Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 2008R2, just because it won't need moving again for a good while longer. Might as well - SIMS will need a 64 bit server anyway in most schools (assuming no SQL Express).
vikpaw Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 2008 is more secure by default plus you have virtualization options built in. Go for it as its newer and stable. Just remember to open up the SQL ports on the firewall.

matt40k Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I think he was refering to 2008 R2 only being 64bit, and not like Windows 7 which is 32bit or 64bit. SQL doesn't virtualize well, so I wouldn't take that as a pro for 2k8 R2. Security yes, futureproof yes. Reason virtualization does work well for SQL is it needs a lot of disc IO which normally is lacking and in fact it's true of CPU\RAM, so normally you can only put low end stuff on the same box, the fact you have to license physical CPU in the server regardless of it it'll use it and if you've got failover - technically, you need to license any CPU it could failover too! I'm sure however Microsoft will be turning a blind eye to it however for schools.

After looking at the SIMS technical road map Server 2003 looks to be supported until at least Autumn 2012 and there is no info beyond that so it might be unsupported beyond that, but its speculation. I am currently looking at my SIMS setup and support life cycles and as far as I can see support for my setup is ok until at least Autumn 2012 Server 2003 R2 32Bit Office 2003 Professional Windows XP Pro 32Bit clients SQL Server 2008 Standard In order to be sure of being supported after Autumn 2012 I would like to upgrade over the 2012 Summer break to avoid server interruptions Microsoft look to have extended support available for the software above until 2014 / 2015 ( still looking for the support dates for the SQL 2008 Package)

soapyfish Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I do not know, I just know that the SIMS technical Road map says its supported until at least Autumn 2012, it does not say that it will be supported or unsupported after that.

Has this changed now? i vaguely recall something about the deadline being extended but i can't find the source. Either way, i'd really not want to be running 2003 in 2013. 2008 is much better.
soapyfish Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I would not like to be running 2003 anymore let alone until 2013 but all the recent budget cuts force me to look into getting as much life as possible out of the kit we currently have
matt40k Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 They extended it by a year, the whatever release will be the last release they support you installing it onto. They generally don't check your OS, so it may work but they won't support it if it doesn't work. Personally, if your using Windows Server 2003, in the next three years you should be looking at going Windows Server 2008 R2 or newer. 1

The last MicrosoftWindows Server 2003 compatible SIMS release will therefore be Spring 2013. resource #17910
