Didn't want to jump on the IP camera thread and get things off topic so here's a seperate thread..

In a nutshell we have had massive problems in our area with our cars being broken into twice already this year, various damage done to door panels, wing mirrors, wipers, etc.. and just recently some piece of s*** tried to break into our house while I was in the front room.

So far I think we've been relatively lucky but I'm fed up of nothing being done, or more accurately do-able, by the police so I'm looking to install a couple of cameras on our property that overlook our cars and also out back door. I'm still checking the legalities and notices required but what I've learned is that you need cameras to be of a certain specification if they are to be legally admissable so does anyone know what the spec' is and where they can be had without breaking the bank?

I figure that if someone is going to continue to try and steal from me that I'm going to do my damndest to make them pay for it.

They could make a start by arresting the right people.

A few months back, a friend of mine was sitting in his house alone when a lad of about 19/20 came a kicked his front door in several times and then ran off. Now sure what the purpose was, we suspect the motive was racism .

Anyway, my friend being the guy that he is wasn't gonna watch someone run away after kicking his front door like that, and he chased him down the street and after about half a mile, he caught up with him and rugby tackled him to the ground.

The guy he just knocked to the ground then started screaming blue murder and he attracted a lot of attention from passers-by.

To cut a long story short, my friends wife arrived home to a damaged door, several police cars stationed in and around her road and her husband under arrest.

"-Now- what have you done, dear?"

@projector1: Currently testing Zoneminder... initial dabbling looks good

To give it a bash just grab a cheap IP camera from Ebay and download the live CD - I've currently got it running on a PIII 600MHz with 256MB RAM!!!

I have zone minder running at home too, so far it seems to be working fine. I am using the day/night cameras that are seen on ebay mine are not IP but BNC connections using a 4 port card on the PC it seems to work just fine.

As a side note to this I feel so sorry to hear all the problems you appear to have where you live. I live in Cornwall and although there are problems here they don't to be anything like what some of you are experiencing. What is happening to this country
