synaesthesia Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Is being remade - Hugely fond memories of both original films so this is a little bit worrying if anything. I am intrigued though as to what they can do with modern tech.
mac_shinobi Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 when you say re made - you mean as in making a 3rd one or as in being digitally re mastered or what exactly ? Johnny 5 is Alive !!!
Arthur Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 (edited) when you say re made - you mean as in making a 3rd one or as in being digitally re mastered It's a new movie due out in 2013 and it is a reboot (probably the same premise as the first Short Circuit, but with different actors and a CGI Johnny 5). Dimension Films is making a deal with Tim Hill to direct its reboot of Short Circuit, the 1986 film about an experimental robot manufactured to be a weapon until a lightning strike fills it with intelligence. It runs away and befriends a fractured family, the military in hot pursuit. Hill directed the Illumination pic Hop and Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks. Dimension optioned the remake rights in 2009, originally signing Paul Blart: Mall Cop helmer Steve Carr and screenwriter Dan Milano. The project has languished and Hill is being brought in to supervise a new script and get the iconic robot Johnny 5 moving. David Foster, who produced the original, is producing with Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde. Hill is repped by Gersh and Principato-Young. (Source) Dimension Films is currently working out the details of a deal with director Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks) to call the shots on the new Short Circuit. Hill is also up to supervise a new draft of the screenplay, though there’s no word yet on who his collaborator will be. Hill has a long history of delivering candy-colored, safe-for-all ages pics, including the first Chipmunks movie, Hop, Muppets From Space, and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties – not to mention, his longtime position as a staff writer for the TV series SpongeBob SquarePants. aerospacemango Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 Oh for heaven's sake............. Is nothing sacred? Will we be getting every 80's film re-hashed? I know that there's a limited number of stories you can tell....but isn't it about time that the general public stood up and said "Give us some original films, not the same old rubbish pts 4,5 & 6" There's a lot to be said for independent films, and those from the Far East!
GREED Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 Shall we have the list of films that were brilliant in their day (or even not in this case!), stand the test of time today, and have been remade AWFULLY! Time Machine Planet of the Apes ...
localzuk Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 Just you see, they'll remake Casablanca next...
GREED Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 They are doing Total Recall... although that was not brilliant the first time around. In fact most Arnie films should be left well alone!

In fact most Arnie films should be left well alone! Not brilliant? What planet are you on, Mars? :-) It's a classic. So many quotable lines, so many cheesy scenes. It even spawned a dance track. Best of all it has an alien hooker with 3........... :-)

But he just cannot act unless he is a robot (which suits his skills perfectly!). Although, The Running Man, now there was a good film that 'could' be made even better with the right actor...

Arthur Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Will we be getting every 80's film re-hashed? Well, they have already started re-hashing films from 2002 so I think they must have already run out of 80's (and 90's) films. In fact most Arnie films should be left well alone! It seems Hollywood is intent on remaking almost every single film Arnie has done. Red Sonja is being re-made (hopefully with Amber Heard as Sonja ), as is Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. I bet True Lies, Last Action Hero, Eraser or End of Days will be next.

Arthur Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Predators was a lot better than Aliens vs Predator: Requiem though.
dayzd Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Will we be getting every 80's film re-hashed? Well, they have already started re-hashing films from 2002 so I think they must have already run out of 80's (and 90's) films. That's nothing. 2010 saw a pretty much shot-for-shot remake of a 2007 film. Not suggesting that the story is a particularly brilliant one, sometimes it's simply not necessary to remake something. Normally because you're not offering anything new to the story, sometimes because you run the risk of spoiling the original! There's a lot to be said for independent films, and those from the Far East! Yes. Yes there is. I've watched quite a few Sundance-type indy films in previous year, and they're much more original. Film4/Lottery Commission funded films have more to say than your average remake/reboot, too. It's a shame some of these films don't get more exposure.
Arthur Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 That's nothing. 2010 saw a pretty much shot-for-shot remake of a 2007 film. Only a three year difference! Let The Right One In from 2008 was remade in 2010 as Let Me In and the English-remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2009 is due to be released this year. American's sure don't like subtitles.
Arthur Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 Is nothing sacred? Not even the Thundercats...
MK-2 Posted August 10, 2011 Report Posted August 10, 2011 there is a lot to be said for far east movies yes, unfortunately once they get popular hollywood usually latches on and remakes it with CGI and simplify the plot so audiences understand (as in the ring!)
