6Foot2 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 For those who are Chemistry minded only. I was reminded of something that happened to while I was in the sixth form [many years ago] I was in the sixth form studying Chemistry, Physics and Maths at 'A' Level. A non-Chemistry friend and I decided to take a mid-day break and go down to the local pub [we should not have been allowed in but we knew we would be] We arrive before the 12:00 opening so while waiting I decided to leaf through the flip over telephone directory that were prevalent in telephone boxes at that time. I found a Mr. Cannizzaro. I declared this [with, sadly, some excitement] to my friend who did not understand why I thought this should find this so unusual. I did find it odd because I had never expected to a name so 'odd' in a local phone book. We finished our afternoon break and returned to school. With another sixth form friend who was studying Chemistry I began work on some 'A' Level Chemistry problems we had been set by our teacher. The non-Chemistry friend overheard our discussions and declared that I should have called the guy earlier that day '...to see what his reaction was!' I found it very amusing at the time and I still smile now when I think about it. Perhaps you had to be there...? 2
6Foot2 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 Wheres the EduLART when you need it.... As I said it wasn't really a joke. It was something that happened. Not appreciating the negative rep here but then I guess that is the risk I took in relating this tale?
6Foot2 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 Dunno who gave you the neg rep, but wasnt me OK. My apologies. the neg rep was unsigned and your reply came in at around the same time. I will try not to jump to conclusions in future [2 + 2 does not make 5]
Gatt Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 No worries I tend not to give neg rep unless its for something offensive, illegal, etc...
featured_spectre Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Jebus! I admit the joke was not to my liking but I told it to the mrs and she cracked up, I would pos rep you but I must have thanked you or something recently.
6Foot2 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 ...the joke was not to my liking... It is NOT a joke. This DID happen. I suppose it seems unlikely but it did. More negative rep on the way? 1
featured_spectre Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 oh I thought it was a genuine joke! haha my bad. no neg rep
garethEds Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I really don't understand why someone would give you neg rep for a story. I'm really beginning to dislike this rep stuff. Surely the Thanks button is enough.Gareth 1
CESIL Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I didn't give you any negative rep but I don't get the point of the story... ...is there some subtle chemistry based reference I am missing with regard to "reaction" and the name Cannizzaro...
6Foot2 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 (edited) I didn't give you any negative rep but I don't get the point of the story... ...is there some subtle chemistry based reference I am missing with regard to "reaction" and the name Cannizzaro... Cannizzaro's reaction takes aldehydes and produces ketones. While this sort of conversion was possible before Cannizzaro the yields are much higher after Cannizzaro's work was published [i hope this is accurate as it has been a while since my 'A' Level Chemistry!] Edit: BTW: Thanks to the anonymous positive repper: http://gyazo.com/612165c97421b7220d8ff0c735c6e6b9.png Edited July 26, 2011 by 6Foot2 Add detail to the post.
Oaktech Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) I think you've opened a canniwormo's DaveP there should be something between positive and negative rep for this... as it is, i got the jokenecdote and i chuckled. Edited July 27, 2011 by Oaktech
aerospacemango Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 What surprises me is that someone took the time to write "your jokes are getting worse" even though you state, in the title, "Not really a joke....." What is it about the title that the neg-repper doesn't understand? I got the "joke" aspect of it, and thought it highly amusing. As an anecdote, I think you'd need to be in the company of Chemists/chemistry students, for it to have a real bite, as they would understand it straight away. Remind me never to post an anecdote on here......!
Gatt Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 there should be something between positive and negative rep for this... or do you mean :faceplam:
Oaktech Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 [2 + 2 does not make 5] it does for sufficiently high values of 2.
Oaktech Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 or do you mean :faceplam: no no, i mean "crap, it doesn't work, quick, edit it and hope no-one notices... crap, they've noticed"
Guest Guest Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 It is getting dafter and dafter by the day on edugeek now. To me the rep system is there as a representation of how helpful you are, your knowledge, experience - after all we are all here for that reason. Unfortunately now the rep system is just a measure of how long your tongue is, and how good you are at posting funny youtube clips.
