Admiral208 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Hi guys, came in thismorning to find that none of the gpp's are working along with a few other settings. Checked group policy and it says that it is unable to find the correct policy in the SYSVOL folder. Checked the backups and the last backup has been running for 35 hours! I guess the problems are related but not sure how yet. So I cancelled the backup and now I need to restore the policies in the SYSVOL folder. We use BackupEXEC 12.5 and there is an option to restore the system state sysvol folder. IS THAT I I NEED TO DO?? DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE?? never had to restore any system state data before.

chazzy2501 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 OK, click on the group policy in group policy manager and go to details. This will show you the unique ID of the missing GPO. Check the sysvol polices folder for that folder. if it's missing I'd look for it first (do a search) it may have been moved or renamed by accident. If not try restoring just that folder. rinse and repeat for other missing GPOs. if the folders are there check the contents, (compare with it neighbours) it could also be security settings. I once cured a similar problem by powercycling the DC! GO.....

I would have just restored the individual folders but backupexec cannot restore individual folders from the system state. The only option I have is to restore the SYSVOL folder. What are the implications of doing this?
kmount Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Not used BE in years but you could try navigating via c:\windows\ to sysvol that way which possibly will let you restore the individual files. I wouldn't restore the whole system state if I could help it.
chazzy2501 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 eeep, do you have to restore the folder over the destination? or can you restore to somewhere else? I don't know what'll happen if you restore over the top! Best case I GUESS is that the folder is retored and the DFS resyncs and everything grrreat? Worst case you take all 4 domains controllers down restore 1 by 1 until you're back to your last good backup. this is a horrid place you find your self in. I'm glasd I'm virtualised and could get those files if I needed. Also do you have any idea how this happened?
Admiral208 Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 No idea how it happened. I have found a way to restore to a different location so I will restore the sysvol folder to a different drive and then copy the policies back one by one. Does that sound ok??

Davit2005 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Admiral 208, How were you doing your'e backups. We got an old version of BE at work so I'd set up a cmd line 2008 R2 wdadmin task as a test yesterday, got today off work and I hope all is well when go back on Monday :-/.
Admiral208 Posted September 2, 2011 Author Posted September 2, 2011 We use BackupExec. It took me a while to realise that I couldn't restore the files individually, I had to restore the system state and extract what I needed.
ladlenits Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Awesome! thanks worked like a charm. Moved all my policies and scripts back in and GPO's are processing again. I'm running BE 2010 and dont know if this works on other versions but I was able to just restore the sysvol folder. I went to restore system state and right clicked on the Sysvol folder then selected "Include/Exclude files...", Clicked OK on the window that appears and then only the Sysvol folder was selected. Since I was redirecting the restore to another folder anyway I think the only thing that did for me was save me time anyway but just an FYI if anyone else runs into this problem. Wish I knew how this all happened in the first place. Thanks again for the help!
