jamesfed Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 IE8 - the only real difference between the two is the HTML5 and GPU rendering components. Having said that there are a number of other changes but these are the ones that stand out for me.
Michael Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 You should run IE8 on XP. It's the most secure for XP and you can also deploy this with WSUS. Alternatively run IE7 as a minimum, but I wouldn't recommend IE6. It doesn't even support tabbed browsing it's that old! IE9 should be installed on Vista SP2 and Windows 7, however Microsoft have said IE10 will only work on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. You could also look at Firefox 5, but Mozilla seem to be releasing a new version every week. It makes me wonder whether they're just trying to catch up with IE9 in version numbers. There aren't any major differences between FF4 and FF5 as far as I can see.

Hightower Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 We just use IE8 for our clients, and will continue to do so until we upgrade to Windows 7. On my machine I used to use Firefox but got sick of it hanging every couple of minutes - stuck Chrome on and not had a problem with it since (apart from it strangely only seems to log history for bookmarked sites).

We use Firefox Community Edition in our district quite extensively. With the ADM templates they provide, every option that you see in About:Config is configurable, and to the point where you can control it on a computer object and user object level. You can even just set these options as default, or lock them down and make them unchangeable. Pushing out new versions is as easy publishing the MSI in AD. The guys over at Front Motion really did a slick job with this. I'd have to argue that their version of FF is even more configurable than IE with the templates.

AlfaTech Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 IE8 standard, because IE7 is too vulnerable. Definitely not IE9, cos it's utter pants, is glitchy as hell and is trying to be Chrome. I mostly use Chrome (occasionally Firefox), but I've found that Chrome doesn't seem to work so well in a multi-user environment
