Kittens are programmed that when their Mum picks them up by the scruff of the neck, they must stay still. This stops them from slowing the mother down, if they need to escape predators. In fact, the scruff is the easiet way of picking a cat up...cos it works when I do it to them too!! Haven't tried it on the girlfriend yet....but will report back when I have
