Thank you all for your advice; I uninstalled Avast and downloaded MSE. She was desperate to get playing on it so when I next get chance I'll work through Arthur's list of other things to consider as well.

The last version of Windows I maintained at home before moving to Linux was XP. It was necessary to ensure you had AV, Firewall and malware checkers installed and running. My mother has purchased a W7 laptop and asked me to "make it safe from all those nasties on the Internet". I've turned on Automatic Updates and installed Avast already but is there anything else I should do apart from regular maintenance? Should I download a recommend Firewall program or will the W7 Firewall be fine?

I've changed the A or CNAME record on the website but they still plonk their own favicon on even though it directs to a site not hosted with them. I want to buy a name (or pay the renewal fee on a name) and log in and say 'the website is hosted at http://www.example.co.uk.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/' Then when I go to example.co.uk it serves the site from the S3 bucket but the user is none the wiser.

I've read lots and have got loads of words swimming around in my head (DNS, A Records, www, CNAMES, framed web forwarding, transparent etc.) but need some clarification. I want to transfer existing domains to a provider and have them pointed at a server instance on Amazon. I won't be running the instances all the time because it is just for testing and experimenting purposes but when I do have them running I want to be able to type in the name of the website and have it reach the server, rather than remembering the IP address. FYI: I purchased one domain using free parking .co .uk and they plonk their own favicon on and when you look at the code it is in a frame instead of the lovely, optimised HTML I like to write and see. I don't want it like this. Can I do what I want? Do all except free parking do it and I was just unlucky with my first choice? P.S. I've searched the forums and 123-reg comes up as does Carl, easily and a few others but I would like to know about my specific issue rather than a general recommendation for a domain registration company.

Even the strict search mode on Bing brings up questionable results vs the moderate safe search Google being fine.

I like it because of the control you have over your data on there and the ease with which you can post to different circles so I can keep parents and close friends updated with things like first day at school (for my kids) which I don't want everyone else to know about. I also find it easier to keep up to date with people I want to while still maintaining a link to people I'm not so fussed about knowing when they have pizza for their dinner. Although most of my actual friends are on Google+ it is a pain that not all my 'friends' and are on Google+ so I need to keep my Facebook account to maintain that link.

My understanding is that the capital letter at the end of the numbers is the grade but I can't be certain.

My approach to games in the classroom is that there is a time and a place for them. I want the ability to block sites if certain students are not taking the hint but there are times when I want to reward students with free time to play games for ten minutes. We currently use Impero and after the initial 'training' of students they now know that if they are on a site without permission it will get permanently blocked. If however they avoid the games sites during lesson time and only use them with specific permission I won't block them. In the majority of cases it develops a mutual respect and as already noted - the final 5% don't give a monkey's regardless so get their Internet access removed.

I've got a pre-Intel Mac so won't be upgrading and therefore won't be able to install my copy of Lion on their computer. I am more than happy to recommend that they buy a copy of Lion but don't see the justification for paying out for two OS's when they will only have one installed. If I had a copy of snow leoplard and installed that just prior to installing a paid for version of Lion do you think that would be in violation of terms and conditions? Is Lion an OS on it's own or is it an extension of Snow Leopard?

My parents have got an Intel iMac running Tiger. They keep talking about upgrading and I suggested they wait until Lion. Now it seems they would need to pay for an upgrade to Leopard before they can upgrade to Snow Leopard before they can pay again to upgrade to Tiger! It all seems like a bit of a Mac Steve Jobs classic to me. Does anyone know if it is possible to bypass paying out more than once to upgrade to Lion?

I've just had another play with GDocs and it gives me the download first message for anything other than actual Google Documents which download and allow editing fine.

That's really weird. In the not so distant past you would just click again and that would download it but on mine it won't now either!

I have a vague recollection of reading in the comments that it currently does not support editing documents locally. I currently use GDocs for writing to basic text files with limited success. It does however allow for offline editing then syncing later.

Would it be wrong to use that for an E-Safety lesson?
