Dukey Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Hi guys At our school we are running windows server 2003, and about 3 weeks ago we had a power cut, ever since then connecting to the network shares hasnt been the same. Ill explain... Right when im on the server and go to start then run then type in \\servername\sharename it wont connect it comes up wih an error about not being able to connect.. i will get the exact error later on. Now still on the server i do the same (start, run) then type \\serverip\sharename again it comes up with the error. From the Client end if i go to Start, Run then type \\servername\sharename it connects to it perfectly no problems, but if i type in \\serverip\sharename it say network path not found. Any ideas ive been scratching my head for a week now and its causing a problem with scanning because the scanner we have sends the scanned document to the server using ip as we cant do it by server name and its also stopping a database backup also. Any ideas would be much appreciated Thanks alot in advance! Dukey
jamesfed Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Some kind of faulty DNS entry if you have multiple servers looking after DNS? 1
JonWPS Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Windows Firewall? Always worth a check as it has a habit of switching itself on sometimes following reboots. Left me pretty red-faced a few months back when we had issues with one of our servers and it turned out to be the firewall. 1
Dukey Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 wow thanks for the quick replys i didnt think about firewall ill check that later. @jamesfed sorry i forgot to mention that our server is a member server and doesnt use its self for DNS but another server offsite, im sure DNS is working though because all nslookup queries work. I thought it might have been but its proved not to be. Thanks guys for the quick responses, please do keep them coming if you have any ideas, im totally dried up lol.
bart21 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Does it have a ststic or dynamic ip address? (my thinking: if it is a dynamic address (assigned by DHCP) has the address changed from what you think it should be) nick 1

(my thinking: if it is a dynamic address (assigned by DHCP) has the address changed from what you think it should be) nick Yeah i have checked if the server still has the same ip and it does, this is what puzzling me everything is as it should be but it just isnt working, my thoughs were something in Services, but nope not that either.
smithson83 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 If you ping the Server name does it resolve to the right IP? 1

smithson83 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 if you tracert to your server (by both name and IP) does it go straight to the server or does it try to get out via the Router / Default Gateway and back in? (sorry for random Q's but it's a strange situation) 1
SW-ICT Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Hi, We have a work experience student in today and said: "The static IP address may have changed" He’s a smart lad maybe worth having a look ** This was posted by me--- But the fix was by our work experience lad*** Please provide him with feedback though me :-) 2
featured_spectre Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Is there a possibility of a conflicting IP address, if you have DHCP it may register that the IP is released and pass it to someone else, then when the server rebooted it couldnt take its own IP address. 1
Dukey Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 Hi guys just thought id update yo all on the situation, ive checked to see if it still has the same ip address and it does, its fixed, the windows firewall is turned off, ive tried restarting the workstation service and still no luck, is there any other ideas that you may have, still scratching my head HARD! not good as its year end and alot of scans need to be done and sims backups e.t.c.. Thanks alot Dukey

ricki Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Have you turned the switch off and restarted it about 10 mins later so settings are reloaded. We used to have all sorts of problems like this before we had ups on our switches. Richard 1
