We use Google Apps for our students, live@edu for our staff and have a zimbra server just hanging around that I use to send notifications from other software such as helpdesk or backups.

Well that's not really what happened. I set up staff on live@edu about two years ago and then decided to try google apps in the lsat 3 months so put the students on it. I'm not sure I could risk moving the staff to google. More fun this way.

More fun this way. Fair enough. We setup Live@edu for our staff here a few months ago and they have taken to it really well which always make a nice change.
bossman Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Been using Zimbra for a good number of years and have now virtualised it, it runs very well, is free and as we cannot guarantee our ISP at this moment. The staff rely very heavily on it for all their personal communication in and out of the school and have become quite accustomed to it never being down in all this time so we would be very reluctant to move, although we have thought recently of migrating some of our web services to the cloud. Its so easy to push out services to the cloud but not as easy getting your data back if the occasion calls for it and you lose certain control. Each school has to weigh up the pros and cons of moving its services to the cloud and how it will benefit the staff and students.
jonspurs Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Hey quick question, Our previous network manager set up Zimbra which authenticates to 1 of 3 of our RM DC servers. Now we're getting CC4 in, the server names may change, but the domain won't - so my question is can you get Zimbra to authenticate against a domain rather than a specific server, so if one is down, the next will be there to serve it? Don't want to touch any settings before I jump in. Thanks for your time, Jon
CyberNerd Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 IIRC you have to name the server, quite easy to do. I haven't used zimbra for a while now so things may have changed.
3s-gtech Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 We still use internal mail (a custom LA built Exim/Sendmail system) because until recently, and still with regular drops, our internet connection was nowehere near good enough to use an internet provided system. Think 5s latency, on every page. We're just starting to look at Google as an LA, but I still quite like the idea of in-house, so I have a test Zimbra VM also.
