I'm looking at replacing most of my switches in the cabs around the school. I'm looking at the HP Pro Curve ones as i already have a few in place.

 

I'm looking for the below:

48 Port switch with Fibre - or a 24 port switch with fibre and 24 port without and link them together - if cheaper!

24 Port switch with Fibre

 

Can anyone recommend any good ones as there seem to be so many and i get a bit lost with all the different types of HP switches!

I'd agree with the 2510-48 - However, Only go for the 2510G if you need gigabit to the desktop. The price differential is quite substantial.

I would take a look at the HP A series.. The HP A5120 series would be a good choice....they run comware instead of provision OS.

What one would be the one without gigabit to desktop just so i can have a look at price comparison. Although am looking at running thinclient accross the site so gigabit would be beneficial there.

That depends on the rest of your infrastructure. STP adds overhead to every packet that travels along an STP enabled route.

If every port on every switch has STP enabled then every packet will have an undesirable overhead.

In some conditions such as large file transfer rates or streaming this could cause packet loss but your unlikely to ever be able to tell if STP was the cause without advanced diagnostic tools.

 

STP (or RSTP nowadays) is used to determine if a packet has already passed through a switch port once already.

We commonly configure loops in our network to provide redundancy, with kilometers of cable and fibre and a prolific rodent population chomping through cables is a regular occurance.

 

STP holds one section of the loop down (Blocking) so if a Rat chews through a cable elsewhere the system will unblock the unwanted loop and allow packets to pass keeping your network running which is the complete opposite of why many people invoke it on this forum.

Vital if your running VoiP on your VLans!

 

So the $64,000 question should you enable STP on all of your switches as a defence against kids looping a wall socket out?

 

IMOHO, No. It serves very little purpose adds overhead where its un-necessary and is unlikely to help as the entire switch is likely to block all ports in such a scenario until it either resets of its own accord which can take several minutes to happen or until the NM shuts everything down and restarts his network!

 

Enabling STP on anything other than a redundant link is likely to make diagnosing the real cause of your outage harder rather than easier.

 

I would prefer to just shoot the child through the head that created the loop as we do with the vermin that eat my cables....

Procurve has a loop guard feature that can be enabled to prevent loops on edge ports. So i'd enable it. Also spanning tree doesn't add overhead to every packet but it does send some additional frames called BPDUs although these won't effect network performance. Generally you should enable both spanning tree and loop guard.

I know you were just talking retail pricing but just though i'd let you know we have these in stock at:

 

2510G-48 - £800

2510-48 - £330

 

So you don't want to be paying more than that really

I deployed aload of HP ProCurve's to one of my sites last year, very good switches, very reliable.

 

Most of the switches I configured and deployed were HP ProCurve 2510G-48, 2510G-24, 2510-48.

 

Spanning Tree - to prevent any loop back, you need to enable the spanning-tree command on the switches.

 

Dont overkill your edge switches though, for example 48 Port GIG to a location where you'll only have 10 active connections!

Another vote for the ProCurves, just about to get in some more 2510-48s. Considered the G, but won't be worth the extra cost as yet for us. Lifetime warranty, the new models are very quiet (the 24 ports ones are silent) and rock-solid.

Only thing I would say about the HP ProCurve Warranty - We brought a couple of 2910al (48 Port POE+ GIG Switch) which went pop and if you want a new replacement you will need original proof of purchase, not copies, the original, if you don't have it, they will send you a refurbished model!

 

When I've rang the ProCurve Warranty line up, I always end up having a argument with the engineer as they think your just bloody stupid at the other end and disbelieve you!

It can mean there's a small delay when you plug in something.

 

EDIT: And if you're using it for it's intended purpose of providing redundant links between switches it's recommended that you look into it's configuration in more detail. If you just switch it on it can disable the most efficient route between the switches.

I was having a right old slagging match with the techie over the phone - I was reporting that I had a 2910al die and he kept on blaming it was our fault due to a (switch was on UPS) power cut and wouldn't swap it out! - in the end I got the hp supervisor to get it swapped.

We are just about to put in 1x 5412ZL, 3x 2910AL 24G PoE, 12x 2510G-48, 4x 2510G-24, and somewhere there is a partridge in a pair tree. So +1 for procurve!

 

I've never had to prove ownership on procurve kit to HP support though.

Funny you should say that. There is an issue with the latest firmware for the 2510g's. It crashes on accessing the web gui, so currently they are running Y_11_12.

That's interesting.............the java app crashed on me a few weeks ago remoting onto one of my 2510G's..........
