Dragon Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Only thing I would say about the HP ProCurve Warranty - We brought a couple of 2910al (48 Port POE+ GIG Switch) which went pop and if you want a new replacement you will need original proof of purchase, not copies, the original, if you don't have it, they will send you a refurbished model! When I've rang the ProCurve Warranty line up, I always end up having a argument with the engineer as they think your just bloody stupid at the other end and disbelieve you! Did they both go pop or just 1? I was looking at getting 1 of these but if they are unreliable I might reconsider!
IanT Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I've had a bout 3 go pop\bang! on me. There is a firmware update for them which controls the power to the POE part of the switch which stops the poe component failing (i was told by HP), after upgrading all 2910al they've been fine!
Dragon Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Ah right, its the POE that I need. If a firmware upgrade fixes it then thats fine.
IanT Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Yup. The HP ProCurve 2520G POE (J9299A) is another alternative, I have 4 of these.
Haptic Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Procurve's superb equipment, lifetime warranty. Never had any issues at any of the sites we've deployed. I'm guessing we can absolutely dismantle the competition on price too. Joe
m25man Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I'm guessing we can absolutely dismantle the competition on price too. Fighting talk in the same thread with two sponsors scrapping.... what's this site coming to. Where's Harry Hill when you need him. 1
dgsmith Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 We bought all procurve when we had a small network upgrade 3yrs ago (although this equated to just a couple of grand and a handful of switches). Admittedly, the decision on the core switch maybe wasn't the best but I guess having been used to planet anything was better, so we opted for a 2810-24G at the core. Obviously this isn't L3 which means there are certain things i'd like to do but can't. Seems like the 2910-24 would be our best bet now which is L3. I can't believe how much the prices appear to have gone up on procurve as well since June 08 - we paid £680 for our 2810-24 and £1260 for the equiv 48 port version yet Misco's prices seem to suggest a 50% hike! If you can get good prices on the procurve range i'd definately go for it, especially with the competitive talks already going on here
Millgate Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Fighting talk in the same thread with two sponsors scrapping.... what's this site coming to. Where's Harry Hill when you need him. Ha, nothing wrong with a bit of competition! Maybe a quote-off is in order! 1
Haptic Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Ha, nothing wrong with a bit of competition! Maybe a quote-off is in order! Aha! Scrapping is such a maligned term, I prefer sparring! It's a good thing for everyone (not least with budgets as they are) Bring it on! Joe

Dragon Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 I am just looking at a HP E2910-48G-PoE+ (J9148A) switch and some places doing this for apx £2k + VAT where as they are mostly £3k + VAT elsewhere eg Misco. Is there something wrong or dodgy with the cheaper ones?
snoerre Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) I am just looking at a HP E2910-48G-PoE+ (J9148A) switch If you don´t need POE+ or RIP and POE is sufficient, take a look at the HP A5120-48G-PoE EI (JE071A) http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13850_na/13850_na.PDF price is ~2600,-€ incl. teejay Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I was having a right old slagging match with the techie over the phone - I was reporting that I had a 2910al die and he kept on blaming it was our fault due to a (switch was on UPS) power cut and wouldn't swap it out! - in the end I got the hp supervisor to get it swapped. By any chance was this a techie from the Netherlands office? I've learnt never to phone them just after lunch as i think they go for a 'smoke' at lunchtime at the local coffee shop and get a bit paranoid.

Dragon Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Make sure you update all switches to latest firmware Ian, did you have any problems with updating to the latest firmware on the 2910 (which one are you running now?) I tried updating to .49 using the web interface but when it reboots there are java errors on the page and the overview isn't displayed properly.
gshaw Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 What one would be the one without gigabit to desktop just so i can have a look at price comparison. Although am looking at running thinclient accross the site so gigabit would be beneficial there. That's interesting, thought thin clients using RDP, PCoIP etc were meant to be quite light on bandwidth? One to watch out for if we go for any thin clients here in future if it is the case that we need 1Gb on the edge. We're running a 5406zl at the core, 2610-24 and 2610-48 at the edge and they've been solid apart from needing a firmware update initially on the 2610s
Dragon Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Booting on the secondary image on the 2910 reverts back to the previous firmware (.38) but I notice after a minute the CPU usage on the switch jumps to 100% and then sits there.
IanT Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) Ian, did you have any problems with updating to the latest firmware on the 2910 (which one are you running now?) I tried updating to .49 using the web interface but when it reboots there are java errors on the page and the overview isn't displayed properly. Hi Dragon, All my 2910 Series are running: Version: W.14.49, ROM W.14.04 I've installed many ProCurve 2910al-48G-PWR (J9148A) and updated the firmware fine on these, I do find the 2510 Series firmware can be a bit dodgy though, I updated the firmware on a 2510G last week and the firmware update process went a bit mad, switch rebooted about 8 times before I could recover and fix it! I would say I am not too keen on the procurve update process, if you doing it via the GUI it doesnt show you the progress of the update. Easier via TFTP Edited July 19, 2011 by IanT
Dragon Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Thanks, seems to be ok now. The firmware upgrade was fine, its my browser that was at fault. Also cpu usage does drop back down after a few more mins. Do you know why there is a different power lead with this switch? it has a notch cut out on the power lead male plug and is apparently a hot condition IEC lead rather than just a normal IEC lead.
