Jamman960 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I've just had a quick look at the Sims 2011 Summer Pre-Release note published today and spotted this: We have updated FMS to give it a greatly enhanced new look and feel alongside several other changes. This is the first I've heard about a facelift for FMS, has anyone seen it yet? I'm guessing we're not talking about it going towards looking like sims.net... surely they'd make more of a song and dance about that and have several beta tests etc etc

Sivadam Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 (edited) The details about this were published in Resource 17952 on 11th May! Our Finance team have had the document for nearly a month. They ain't looking forward to the changes but they'll soon get used to 'em! One of 'em still misses the keyboard shorcut routes that were in in FMS DOS! Edited June 8, 2011 by Sivadam 1
PhilNeal Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Glennda I object! It's listed in our booklet describing what we are doing for annual entitlement published ~ Nov 2010. SIMS Direct schools are sent our booklet and so do LAs. On this occassion I plead not guilty.
localzuk Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Its kinda surprising that people haven't made much noise about it, we usually do when we see such things. Maybe it just slipped through our net! I'll mention it to my manager and finance officer tomorrow and see what they think, as we've decided to stick with FMS as well as SIMS.net for the foreseeable future.
glennda Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 It's in the next release ie summer. any more info as to what is going to change phil? I would just like to be able to pre-warn staff!!
TheScarfedOne Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I got this warning at the SCOMIS event down our way, as well as a load of "academy" related updates. Liked the twitter update about the accredition push. Agree though - if you could give us some more info what is changing it would be nice
Sivadam Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 (edited) any more info as to what is going to change phil? I would just like to be able to pre-warn staff!! It's all on the Resource document I identified above! (Well at least the Icons are!) Edited June 9, 2011 by Sivadam
PhilNeal Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 The main change is that it can use a full screen so more lines can be seen at the same time. The grey pre 2000 look has been replaced by much lighter screens. Sub menus are down the side now rather than across the top.
localzuk Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Well, I'm pleased its getting an update. The Win 3.1 look is a bit long in the tooth now. Is it getting any updates to reduce the printer related issues people have?
AyatollahPies Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I'd rather it re-written than given a mere polish.
Jamman960 Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 (edited) As above its good to see the FMS GUI getting some attention, judging by the icons it shouldn't be too much of a learning curve. Is there any chance of seeing a few screenshots? I'd be interesting in seeing how the look compares to sims.net and hopefully be able to give our accounts department a better idea of whats to come. I probably should keep a closer eye on supportnet, I don't remember seeing any product booklets earlier in the year although my line manager may have squirreled it away somewhere(Direct supported Independent School). I was just suprised to see such a potentially major change get so little attention. Our accounts dept tend to have everything written down including menu routes and icons etc, they're not the most IT literate bunch unfourtunatly Edited June 9, 2011 by Jamman960
vikpaw Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 That's the only thing i saw on SupportNet regarding the change, just the map of old icons to new. Didn't think there was much point. Haven't noticed any other information regarding other changes. I don't see the point if the underlying system is remaining the same, as the users are stuck in the mud as with most things and if you're going to annoy them at least give the whole program an overhaul at the same time and bring it to the 21st century.
Sivadam Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 (edited) Here is a PDF of all the old icons and there replacements FMS Icons Now that looks exceedingly similar to Resource 17952 that I referred to twice, above! And, as Phil says, it is referred to on our SIMS Entitlement document! Edited June 9, 2011 by Sivadam
Edu-IT Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Has anyone got a link to where I can see the new icons? ;-)
GavinB Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Ok just thought peolple might want a direct link to it. Have taken it down now so if you want it go searching for the notices or resources already metioned.
vikpaw Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Has anyone got a link to where I can see the new icons? ;-) I'm sure someone said there was a link on some LA webpage a few posts up Edit: sucks! it was a school site and got bullied off
superfletch Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 (edited) Just applied the beta to a test machine and I have to say I'm genuinely liking the new 'fisher price' look to be honest. Agree about the printer comment by @localzuk earlier. Has anyone got a link to where I can see the new icons? ;-) This attachment doesn't cover all the icons, just the accounts payable ones. However it does give you an indication of the new look and feel. The full icon listing is in the resource sivadam mentioned. Edited June 9, 2011 by superfletch
matt40k Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Is it getting any updates to reduce the printer related issues people have? What printer problems was the response I got from Capita, to be fair they've sorting the permissions problems and given instructions how to manually resolve it. So hopefully they've resolve the printer also, still I think it'll be easier if they just embedded export to PDF rather then printing.
Edu-IT Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 How do you get the BETA? Do you have to be a CAPITA something or other?
matt40k Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Speak nicely to Capita Distribution and promise you won't apply it on a live system - assuming you've got the right license.
