Smart board can't be calibrated by a restricted user

I replaced all the IWB machines with new ones running Windows 7 x64 and the latest version of the smart drivers. Now when ever the staff calibrate the boards it gives no error messages but doesn't save the config. The same is true for the config in general (upping to 20-point calibration etc...). When I run the calibration with admin rights it works fine.

Yeah thats how the staff have been told to calibrate them.

Assuming it saves the config when logged in as admin, you could give staff full access to the C:\, but remove the drive from my computer/hide the contents?

Use filemon or whatever the latest one is to see which file the procedure writes the config out to and then use group policy to push out secutiry settings for that file that allow standard user write access.

I was thinking of doing this but I've had access issues to the IWBs for testing. I've tried giving full control to the SMART folder but ran out of time over lunch.

 

I'm going to try replicating the problem back at our company office but the lack of a smart board is going to make that hard.

I agree, I would only give full control to specific folders if and when the need arises.

From memory I seem to remember that it stores calibration data in the profile of the user that installed the software (at least it did the last time I used a SmartBoard... which would be, oh, about five years or so ago).

Come to think of it, it may even be stored in the registry, again if you can pin down where you can easily push out access rights via GP to that reg key.

If you run the diagnostic software I am pretty sure after you've tried to calibrate it comes up with the registry entries it was denied from editing in the verbose output. I was unaware / wouldn't know how to fix this. I'll try copy the output later!

Sorry - just informs you it can't save orientation data to registry reason access denied.

Cool, so we know that it is just a registry permission issue that can be picked out by regmon / procmon and dealt with via GP. If I had access to a SMART board I'd have a look but we use all Mimio stuff here so not really applicable.

That looks about right BRpilot99, just had a thought, if UAC is on and the user does not have permission it will bail but if you set it to compatibility mode for XP it will virtualize the registry call and store it in a per user section which may enable it to work without any major changes.

Don't know if your still working on this, but after changing the permissions on the registry settings the board orientation is saved. I know I haven't found all the reg keys, as there is still "access denied" messages but I believe I have got the ones relating to the orientation.

 

In group policy in computer config > Windows Settings > Registry I created the following:

MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SMART Technologies

MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SMART Technologies Inc.

USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\SMART Technologies

USERS\S-1-5-21-1571398548-3677822781-1853464797-3114\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SMART Technologies

 

Changed permission to everyone - so far orientation works and appears to save...

 

However these are just a guess - so use with caution!

I know this is a pain for some but I actually like it.

 

I can orientate the board and then the staff cannot change the orientation and mess it up.

 

It does save the orientation in the registry though I didnt think it was where you guys are claiming. I thought it was elsewhere (though our clients aren't 64bit).
