bondbill2k2 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I have some video footage in MPEG format a teacher wants to edit using movie maker before submitting for examination, the only issue is the current format is MPEG and the teacher is looking to use windows movie maker for editing (mainly just cutting parts out as it was captured from a tape) Could anyone recommend a video converter?

I've used this in the past: Free Video Converter: convert video files easily, AVI FLV WMV MP4 MKV MOV converter. Doesn't support MPEG it seems, files dont show up in the supported formats.
Dos_Box Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Super Convertor is one of the best. yes, it looks a mess, but for converting one format to another with all of the bells and whisles you could possibly want it is the best. And yes, the site is a nightmare when it comes to finding the link! You have to remember that even though a file may be listed as MPEG or AVI, there are many, many different versions of those, all with their different variations of sound, size and format compression used. You simply have to look around the site for posts such as 'Can get picture, but no sound, and 'Sound out of sync' to see these in action.

creese Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 MPEG-TS maybe try editing the file extension. It's a long time since I converted my Mpegs and all my stuff is at home.

Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 7.1.0 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 7.1.0 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 7.1.0 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools EDIT: Or if it's a one off job you could download a trial version of sony vegas.

Fluke Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I've spent soooo long looking into this and finally found a way of importing MPEGs into Movie Maker (WinXP version) last summer. This was tested on XP machines running the KLite Codec Pack. • Download and install AC3Filter from AC3Filter • Download and install MPEG-1/2 DirectShow Decoder Filter from GPL MPEG-1/2 DirectShow Decoder Filter - Browse /GPL MPEG-1_2 Decoder at SourceForge.net • Run Movie Maker. • Attempt to drag an MPEG into the work pane. This will fail with and error. • Click Tools/Options/Compatibilty • Ensure that ONLY DirectVobSub is ticked. • Drag the MPEG into the work pane again. This should now work. • Click Tools/Options/Compatibilty - Ensure that only AC3Filter and GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder are ticked. • You should now be able to use raw MPEG files in Windows Movie Maker. This method does allow users to import MPEGS into WMM. The only downside that I've encountered is that the options have to be set PER USER so this can be a bit of a faff. Anyway, good luck!
