Am I the Only Band-Geek?

Im a sound engineer and can tune a lot of instruments (enough to sound check them anyway) but cant play any!

I miss my engineering days (not done any for 3 years), the joys of miserable band members (usually drummers) singers who can't sing and guitarists who think they should be the loudest thing on the planet when they are on stage...

 

What I would give to do that again

@witch F or B flat? I suspect F and its nearest equivalent in a brass band would be the E flat horn not the euphonium (too deep).

 

I can play just about anything brass - started on cornet went to horn eventually but have picked up the cornet again recently and went to a few rehearsals with my old lot (Poole Borough Band) but don't seem to get the time any more to give it my full attention. Not tried a French horn but would give it a go. Have dabbled with the cello and enjoyed it and played trumpet in a local orchestra for a short while.

 

Love: the social side / challenging contest piece / contesting / beer afterwards

Hate: the politics / Christmas carolling (with a passion) / sectionals

All French Horns are tuned in F even if they are B flat horns - in fact a concert horn has both F and B flat sides ( a double horn) but you play it in F, confusingly enough...

You are welcome to come and have a go at playing my French Horns - bit different to the other brass: smaller mouthpiece, more resistance (that'll be the 18 ft of tubing) different valves, valves on the other side, etc etc!

I have played a cornet occasionally and if I had the money and time I would love to learn to play it properly.

Our orchestra doesnt have political issues, we only do one Christmas concert, and we rarely do sectionals! We don't do contests though but we do quite challenging stuff sometimes.

We welcome any instrument, too, traditional orchestral instrument or band, doesnt matter to us!

After playing all the instruments in a Brass Band I now play Euph for Stockport Silver Band

 

Euphoniums have to be the nicest sounding instrument in a band :-)

I've played all the instruments but the trombone because i could never get my arm to go in the right place fast enough. Double B flat bass is the most evil instrument inthe world, you need 6lungs to play a 2beat note on one of them things!

Trom - Know what you mean, I started on trom and my little arm at the time couldnt reach 7th position so I went on cornet

I'm just about to trade my Geddy Jazz for a Jaguar, but once my finances are back in order, I'll be looking to add a Precision and re-buy a Peavey T40.

 

Amplification wise, I play through a Sansamp and our Mackie PA - lightweight!
