Backup software

Hey folks,

 

Looking for a bit of advise on backup software.

 

I have a new shiney 2008 SBS server that I will need to perform SQL / Exchange / OS backups on, but am not sure software wise what to use.

 

Another nice to have would be that ability to also backup a remote site SQL 2005 box (soon to be upgraded to 2008 R2 when I get the time).

We use backupassist. We back up to NAS. I also have a local USB drive using normal windows backup to act as a bare metal restore (Test that your USB will work with the 2008 media!). It backs up remote SQL and local exchange. We purchased the add-on to backup local exchange mailboxes too (not just the datastore).

IBM FASTBACK or VEEAM are both very very good in this space....assuming you are virtualised for the latter...

System Centre DPM 2010 here - insanely fast on backups to tape and if you get the enterprise class licence you get build in SharePoint/Exchange support as well.

Cost might be a bit prohibitive in your situation as I guess you’re not a school?
