Asomodai Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hey guys. Been building a Linux box, it currently has a socket 478 P4 Northwood 2.4ghz proc, non hyperthreaded. The motherboard does not have a HT feature, is it possible to install a P4 3.4ghz Northwood proc with HT? Obviously it wouldnt use the hyperthreading, but will it run without it?
Norphy Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Hyperthreading is a CPU feature, not a motherboard feature. However, this does not mean that your board will be able to run the CPU as I believe the original 2.4GHz Northwood ran on a 400MHz or 533MHz FSB while the 3.4GHz one ran on a 800MHz FSB. What motherboard are you running the CPU on?

Every manufacturer provides these lists, you just need to find them. Often, BIOS updates provide support for more processors. What make/model of board is it, and what model number processor is it?

Asomodai Posted May 11, 2011 Author Posted May 11, 2011 Yup, its a Asus Terminator 533/ID3. I have updated to the latest BIOS though there are no release notes to let me know what sort of CPU support it has, I have downloaded all the latest drivers from the Asus site.
localzuk Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Ok, that board is a barebones specific model, and according to the Asus site it only supports Northwood era CPU, with a 533Mhz FSB maximum. A Northwood P4 3ghz or a Northwood P4 3.06, problem is, the 3.06 supports HT BUT it does run at 533mhz. Edited May 11, 2011 by Asomodai

In which case, the P4 3.0ghz Northwood runs at 400mhz FSB, whilst the 2.8ghz Northwood runs at 533mhz FSB. Which would give me the better performance overall?

I'd be very surprised if that didn't work with the OP's board. But it's kind of moot now anyway
