Can a non HT motherboard run a P4 with HT?

Hey guys.

 

Been building a Linux box, it currently has a socket 478 P4 Northwood 2.4ghz proc, non hyperthreaded.

 

The motherboard does not have a HT feature, is it possible to install a P4 3.4ghz Northwood proc with HT? Obviously it wouldnt use the hyperthreading, but will it run without it?

Hyperthreading is a CPU feature, not a motherboard feature. However, this does not mean that your board will be able to run the CPU as I believe the original 2.4GHz Northwood ran on a 400MHz or 533MHz FSB while the 3.4GHz one ran on a 800MHz FSB. What motherboard are you running the CPU on?

You need to check the processor compatibility list for the specific model of motherboard. Every manufacturer provides these lists, you just need to find them. Often, BIOS updates provide support for more processors.

 

What make/model of board is it, and what model number processor is it?

There is no official list for supported CPUs for the motherboard which is a Asus p4SC-e (not to be confused with the supermicro board)

The board looks like one that was never sold directly to the public, it might be from one for their barebones systems.

 

What make is the PC?

Yup, its a Asus Terminator 533/ID3. I have updated to the latest BIOS though there are no release notes to let me know what sort of CPU support it has, I have downloaded all the latest drivers from the Asus site.

Ok, that board is a barebones specific model, and according to the Asus site it only supports Northwood era CPU, with a 533Mhz FSB maximum. So, no, HT enabled processors will not work, as processors don't fall back to older standards like memory does.

Thats the wrong PDF, thats for the P4 533A not the 533.

Anyway, now I have to make a choice.

 

A Northwood P4 3ghz or a Northwood P4 3.06, problem is, the 3.06 supports HT BUT it does run at 533mhz.

If the board doesn't specify that it supports HT then you won't be able to use a processor with it in.

There was a 3.06GHz P4 HT Northwood with a 533MHz bus. I'd be very surprised if that didn't work with the OP's board. But it's kind of moot now anyway
