slowey Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 Hey I put a new CPU fan and hard drive into my computer. So therefore had to re-install windows, of course i installed sims 3, but now when I load it up, my computer makes this squealing noise, its not THAT loud, but it's worrying. I thought it may be my graphics card, however it has never done this before, my graphics card isn't even that old (it's an nvidia geforce 9800 GT). I started to think maybe it was the processor or something? It only makes this noise when loading the title screens and stuff for sims 3, not when i'm actually playing it (playing a family). I'm a complete noob and know hardly anything about computers, so am in need of advice please!

glennda Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 sounds like a dodgy fan bearing somewhere - happens alot. if happens when you are gaming i would suggest graphics as the chip would be getting hotter so fan is going to be spinning more. 1
slowey Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 thanks for the replies yeah it would probably help if i listened to wear it was coming from...hehe yeah i thought it could be something to do with graphics card, my brother's good with computers and I asked him about it, but he hasn't listened to my computer to see where it's coming from. i could listen myself and get a rough idea but like i said, i'm a noob. haha, to be honest a lot of things probably need updating, computer is over 4 years old. thanks again

But when my brother was putting in these new parts for me he found 4 small metal squares loose on (what i think was) my graphics card, he said they were heat sinks or something. So he took them out, would this effect it?

Dom_ Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 If you do have the case open when its squealing, slow the CPU fan with your finger (just touch the middle bit)... if the squealing stops then you don't have to worry about anything! :-) 1
Chris-W- Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I had a PC once with the same problem. When using high performance applications (i.e. benchmarking) a 'squealing' sound would occur. Turns out it was the power supply unit. When the PC was drawing more power for the CPU/GPU the PSU obviously wasnt very happy. 1
slowey Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 oh right, wow could be a lot of things then! so the fact that i now have 4 heatsinks no longer on my graphics card, would this cause a squealing noise? I can imagine that all the power sims requires to start up could be causing my graphics card to get too hot and perhaps squeal?
Chris-W- Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I think the 4 'metal squares' you refereed to earlier are the retaining bolts for your graphics card heat sink (possibly ones that weren't needed) though a picture would be so very helpfull If your brother had removed the heat sink entirely then it most certainly would not get very far without overheating. But yes the squealing could be a number of things. As Dom_ suggested earlier try slowing the fan with your finger to see if it stops the sound. If it is the fan then dont worry about it, it wont cause you any problems.

Did your brother remove them to fit your new CPU fan by any chance? I doubt removing them would make the sound suddenly start - more likely to be the CPU fan.

Yeah that is true.. although it's lovely and quite normally haha luckily i have some thermal paste left so i will try it, i did think it was worrying that these came off, because they must be needed otherwise they wouldn't be in there, thanks!

I doubt removing them would make the sound suddenly start - more likely to be the CPU fan. well I think it was the graphics card he took out because I had a problem with my computer not turning on after we put the new things in (but that's a different matter) and the heatsinks were just rattling around in there, so may not have been from my graphics card at all, just found in there, probably fallen off because of fitting the cpu fan, not purposely pulled off though. do you think it's worth sticking back on the motherboard? I'll also try the fan to see what happens.

If they've got double sided tape on the bottom (common for some smaller heatisnks) then the thermal paste wont let them stick back down and they wont really work... In some cases (depending on the use of the heatsink) they wont need thermal paste. 1

slowey Posted April 26, 2011 Author Posted April 26, 2011 Been a while, but just thought I would update, if anyone else has this problem (also because I said I would tell you about my progress haha). It was my graphics card, so I downloaded Rivatuner. With this program comes another called D3DOverrider, which you need to keep minimized while playing the game that causes the issue. force vsync and triple buffering need to be on. This works, thank God haha Thankyou again for your suggestions though
