php help

[intrigue]

my host is Ace Web Hosting and they provide mysql and php. I also have access to the control panel, but lack the knowledge to configure it (I've sent the company an email requesting a little 'advice', but as the hosting is only £35 a year, I don't expect a lot).

I'm trying it locally as a walkthrough first via IIS. I have mysql and php5 installed and running locally, but not apache - is this mt error?

get rid of your shit host as to be honest the worst thing you can have when starting out is a poor host.

Try http://www.servage.net or http://www.easycgi.com as they are both cheap £5 a month and the offer a great service ( i have been using both for about a year) the first being better but without asp support which is my preferred programming language at the minute.

Where as my website is generally PHP based because of VBB and my photogallery being open source software, anyways back to my point,

get yourself a good host and it will all be easier.

If you need help then id be happy to get moodle setup for you and then leave you to it.

I couldn't let it lie.

I used Sokkit (thanks Atom) and managed to get Wordpress going on my machine here at work, and I'm still finding my way around the backend.

@Intrigue I'm trying to get moodle running on my machine at home (with all the headaches) in order to be able to sweep in to school set it up on our web server here. And I very much appreciate your offer of help (PPM me) - this is the first day since Saturday I haven't had a headache. I don't code, apart from some html and css, and consequently find it hard to try to alter things in php etc.

Well, that's my lunchtime gone.

Our new Music teacher is from Radcliffe college where they've 'spent money' *shocked* on a nice web system - including blogs for staff - which works really nice, and looks to provide a useful service.

 

Anyone tried Wordpress for this? - Multiple blogs - file uploading/ downloading from posts??

 

I tried a fresh install but a plugin I tried for file up/download didn't work - and all I had installed was Bad Behaviour and a theme!

 

...or suggest another blogging system??

@Mark: Most of those blogs haven't been updated for months - there appears to have been a lot of initial interest and then nothing.

 

There's numerous blog apps on sourceforge if you search.

looks good mark although i think although its got a lot of features it would be cheaper (i.e. free) to just setup multiple wordpress environments as it takes 5 mins to setup. Or even better then that learn how to split them via catagorys in one wordpress installation.

 

Wordpress supports downloading and uploading of files.

@Rick - right - I just had a quick look, and our guy is still active on his blog - that's not good news then!

I know there are loads on sourceforge [! ] - I just wondered if anyone had used one they though would do the job better.

 

@Inrigue - Wordpress has multisite capability - again - I've never tried that feature [i use WP too]. As for file uploading - I've never tried that! duh! This little addon I was trying made it simpler - but then a restricted WP setup would do if it included that.

I've tried sourceforge and found it time consuming to wade through so many items. It's not a criticism as I think it's good that so many people are offering so much for next to nothing (cf M$), but there is a lot to go throughmto find what you want. I didn't find what I wanted, but I'll have a longer look over the weekend "research" Missus.
