As I bought one from JCollings, I am intending to upgrade it as follows. RAM - Comes with 512mb DDR2 as standard, will be boosting to 1GB DDR2 HDD - Comes with 40gb 1.8" 4200RPM HDD, will be boosting to 1.8" 128GB SSD Drive WIFI - Comes with single antenna running B/G, will be boosting to Dual Antenna A/B/G/N card Bluetooth - Has none, shall be adding bluetooth adaptor and installing it internally CPU - Comes with 800mhz CPU - shall be changing it to 1.33Ghz cpu. BATT - Comes with 3 cell battery - shall be boosting to 6 cell battery. I have looked on line and various people done these changes individually, but nobody did it all to a single Q1. So it shall be my mission to improve it to the following spec. If anyone is interested to see the progress, I shall be updating this thread as and when I do it. 1

Butuz Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Sounds like a fun project but I do have to question the logic of spending £300-£500 upgrading a totally out of date 2 generations old bit of kit when you could just spend the money on a new tablet? I mean iPad1's are a shade over £300 now and boy I wouldnt swap mine for a Q1. Butuz
jamesfed Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Considerd doing the same to my Asus R2H (simlar kind of era) going form 1.25gb to 2.25gb RAM and 40Gb 1.8" SSD (already had a high cap battery) but instead I've finaly settled that I'm going to put it on eBay in a week or so - I just couldn't justify the upgrade as now that I'm out of college I don't have a use for a tablet anymore.

Total cost of parts so far is £103, as we are looking at smaller SSD Drives (32GB will suffice for what we need). Whilst the machine will actually be mine, work want to test upgrades on it for the purpose of electronic registration. If it worked and we got enough we would order in bulk so the cost of parts would go down. My work doesnt like the idea of buying brand brand new technologies with no guarantee it will work. Most places aren't letting us test them, plus this is a good way for me to get a decent spec tablet. If all else fails, I get a nice spec tablet, if it goes well, the school will buy more (even if they are outdated to most people!)

Typing/Word processing is supremely easier with the Q1 keyboard opposed to Ipad. Network port is a huge plus. VGA port also means (with a HDD upgrade) I could load this with media and sit atop my projector. The ipad is a nifty little device, I see the Q1 as equally useful given the right application....however I couldn't compare them.

Butuz Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Ah if you can do it for £100 then fair enough. Mind you I'm very suprised you can get RAM, CPU, Batery, HDD, bluetooth and wireless for £100!!! Am I the only person that actually thinks the on screen keyboard in landscape mode on the iPad is fine??? I can type just as quickly (or should that be slowly??) on my iPad as I can on my PC! Maybe I am just a freak Butuz

I've got a Samsung Q1 Ultra running Windows 7, thinking about upgrading to 2GB of RAM, not sure about an SSD though, 3g modem would be tempting as it has the SIM card slot already.. I might have to look at a CPU upgrade, the 600mhz A100 isn't the fastest!!

featured_spectre Posted April 5, 2011 Author Posted April 5, 2011 OK Small update SSD Drive not going to happen, runs fast enough - infact runs quicker than my laptop at boot up (and they have identical stuff to load etc), so no point on that. Battery lasts a stupidly long time - 7 hours so far and thats running outlook, word, excel and solitaire all at once. CPU -Ended up just adding cooler paste to the CPU and adding some pre-1982 copper coins to the "heatsink". Works a charm even after the over clocking. Check my new blog entry for proper updates
