According to this BBC article here: BBC News - Microsoft spends $7.5m on net addresses

 

Microsoft have brought 666,624 IPv4 adresses from bankrupt US company Nortel for $7.5 million. About $11.25 per address. More significatly, according to the beeb the final batch of IP addresses which were released earlier this year will be used up by the end of 2011. I think I'd best check if my home router is IPv6 compatible!

I've already started on my plans for implementing IPv6 here. Updated our core switch to support it last break. Intending to do our other switches this next holiday.

 

Then during summer, introduce IPv6 DHCP and DNS records.

Would be a long time before we can do it here. I dont think our printers for one can support it.

You can run IPv6 and IPv4 along side each other in dual-stack mode for exactly this reason.

Most manufacturers are slowly but surely releasing firmware updates for their hardware to deal with this. However, it depends on the age of your equipment. If ancient, then you will be able to run alongside for some time, but should look at replacing at some point (as with any ancient hardware anyway).

A year ago, it wasn't overly important... It isn't overly important this year or next either, but its worth making a start. :p

The ultimate question is though - Windows XP supports IPv6, however it isn't enabled by default and you have to install the IPv6 protocol through Properties. How is an admin to do this over hundreds of machines?

 

It is enabled by default on Windows Vista and Windows 7 however! :)

 

I suspect for most printers and/or routers/access points that firmware updates would allow the use of IPv6.

It does make you wonder though why the likes of Microsoft, Google, Apple and other large companies haven't set the trend and move over to IPv6 on a more permanent basis.

Would have thought it only had to be done on equipment that faces the outside world directly. Because our clients don't, they can continue to use IPv4 addresses.

Indeed, if you feel like NATing everything. When IPv6 becomes widespread though, you'll find yourself wishing you'd moved to it, as you'll no doubt find support starts to dwindle for IPv4.

It is important that you at least have an idea that it is comming and new hardware that is purchased supports it otherwise it just degrades into the all to common scenario of everyone paying money to dig themselves a deeper hole. IP6 gear was avalible and did not have much of or any price premium for some brands and so things like that could have been considered and saved people hassle later along the line. I guess it is way easier to wait until it is to late and wine that no one said anything though.

It has to be done sometime, not necessarily soon.

 

The consequence of not doing is that as IPv6-only resources begin to appear, you'll be cut off from them.
