Firefox 4

Anybody else disapponted that Firefox 4 (and also IE9 or so I'm told) have gone to a Google Chrome layout. I'm sorry but why change from the traditional layout? This has actually quite upset me, I liked my browsers laid out the way they were.

It is indeed very 'Chromey' now but that's not all that bad.

The fact it is all "Chromey" now has led to me trying Firefox again, I had converted to Chrome from firefox as I like the search and layout better in chrome

It was a bit weird at first but it makes more sense now, appearance wise it makes more sense to have empty grey space up there than underneath a very full address-bar and bookmarks-bar.

 

But mainly I'm with Butters, wooooooooosh---!

You can change it from the 'chromey' version back to how v3 used to be...

that was my first though too. I've been using it for about 2 hours and the speed increase (HW acceleration on) is great with no slowdown with about 30 tabs atm. I like the simplified UI and the upgrade went smoothly. top bananas to the guys at mozilla...

Okay, changed back to V3 style layout and calmed down. Speed is pretty amazing though. Although I'm not totally liking the menu layout i.e. instead of file, edit etc... having a Firefox menu button.

Im more disappointed with Google Chrome. Google gears is not supported in the Mac version of Chrome, but is in firefox!

Blame the laptop and display manufacturers. Because of them, almost every LCD now has an aspect ratio of 16:9 (and consequently a lower vertical resolution).

 

By making the browsers' user interface smaller you will be able to see more of the webpage you are on, especially if you have a crummy netbook with a resolution of 1024x600.

How often does your average (and I stress average here. I mean like your Mum, not those more like ourselves who want more from our browsers) use any of the functions in the menu bar? At most, people regularly use their bookmarks and occasionally history, which have a sidebar. Your average person isn't interested in the 'View Source' or 'Page info' options, so they've been hidden by default. You can turn them back on if you want, but most people don't want them, so they're not there.

 

This approach makes software simpler for the less technically inclined. They can get started and get what they want from it much easier and without distraction this way.

 

It's a relatively common approach to interface design these days, and it makes a whole lot of sense when you think about it.

fair point but they also hide the bookmarks menu by default though ive managed to add it to the far right of the bookmarks toolbar

It shows me the status with a little green bar on the tab, and I'm pretty sure it did it even before TabMixPlus went on (although you should add that anyway)

More importantly have they cut down on the bloat and stopped it crashing all the time? Recent versions of Firefox since 3.5 have felt like a poor copy of IE and I've moved onto Chrome now, much faster and less buggy

I don't think any progress has been made with either GPO support or a native MSI. However, you can still centrally manage preferences using autoconfig.
