Java.

Looks a bit early days... v0.1

1) start a VNC server on every computer (teacher and students)

- all the vnc servers on the student machines have to be configured

with the same password

2) Create a configuration file for the student modules (an example is provided)

3) Start the student module on the student computers

java -jar student.jar

--- or ---

double click on student.jar

The configuration will be loaded from the file "student.properties" in

the current directory.

4) Start the teacher module on the teacher computer, configuration options will

be asked.

java -jar teacher.jar

--- or ---

Double click on teacher.jar

we wont use vnc in this school. We used to use it on win 2k as a means of remote access to all pcs. Kids got hold of the password and had great fun shutting pcs downs.

What we need is somethink like netop school.

AB Tutor here - its cheap and pretty good - afraid our experience with NetOp was awful - I could never recommend it.

Still haven't managed to get it to work, but was busy sorting out an open source day we are having on Monday, I will take another look this weekend, but you say that you don't want to run vnc.... hmmmm, how did the students access vnc after they got the password? When we had it installed on our 2K network, we got a regedit that hide the icon, so they couldn't get to it that way.

does any one know of a reliable alternative to netsupport school.

Software to control and monitor pc screens in a suite.

Out of interest what is you main reason for finding an alternative to NetSupport School? Is it primarily cost or have you experienced some problems with the software?

I'm not trying to sell you NSS just curious :)

The only problem with LanView, from I have seen (please correct me if I am wrong) is that it will only work on a Windows Server, otherwise I would of used that!!

Is lanview under the GPL?

LanView only works on Windows, true. But it doesn't have to be a Windows Server. It can be Win2000, XP or 2003.

It's not open source and not released under the GPL. It's freeware.

we bought originally 100 licences at £21.00 each + maintainance

6 months ago we bought 14 more licences + maintainance.

We are now told that the maintaince is running out at the end of march.

Original quote for renewal was just under £500. I wasn't aware about how much it was likly to cost every year. Certainly didn'nt know that we only bought 6months worth of support the last time.

I have only called them a few times, one time they never called me back like they said they would.

Ok they have agreed to do the maintainance for £350, its still alot of money to pay every year.

I've had a look at the one mentioned in a previous post here called abtutor and it looks just as good as netsupport and is cheap.

Lanview sounds good on paper, but at least for us, did not work that great. It slowed the workstations down and constantly needed reinstallation.

We have since purchased a program called Netcontrol2. It seems to run better.
