Carrying on From my other thread about the file server slowness.

 

Anybody got any advice which ones to purchase?

 

i've looked at possibly 3 x HP E4800G-24SFP

 

Some E6200 YL with maybe another type for Copper as these appear to be fiber only.

 

Does anybody else have any other recommendations - preferably HP.

Just looking thinking now 2x HP E5500-24gSFP (JE096A) and then 1 x HP E5500-48G Switch (JE090A) for copper

 

Any other ideas?

I need the 24 port to be SFP and i looked at the hp site as it has all the 3com stuff and more models. This is the E5500g i looked at which if you check the picture looks just like this as its the same thing!

I wouldn't go for less than 5500s in the core. 4200g and 4800g make good near edge switches with 4500s on the edge. Good to see that HP kept the decent 3com stuff going...

In an ideal world, I agree, but when you have limited funds in your work place then you fyi the best with what you can.

Is there a particular reason as to why? other then they are just bringing out a new range?

i don't quite trust ebay when it comes to replacing my core switching.

Ideally you should have ALL your servers and ALL of your inter building connections (either fibre or cat6) connected directly into one core switch so that all buildings and servers are on the same backbone fabric for maximum performance. This means speccing a core switch large enough to deal with all of those connections.

 

Simple answer is, how many 10gig links will you need, how many 1000base-fx links will you need, how many 1000base-t links will you need.

I've looked at the Chassis and they are way out of our price league - although theres a 2 year old one on ebay for £26!

 

I need around 40 1gb fiber links and 30 coppers.

You just said you had about £12-13k budget? A 5406zl with 48 gigabit PoE ports comes in at about £5000, add in 2 24port gbic modules, and the price comes to £9750 ish. The problem will be your gbics, which at normal pricing come in at about £190 a piece. But buying 40 of them you should be able to reduce that price. Not to mention, if you speak to a HP reseller, you should be able to 'bundle' all of that and most likely come within that budget price.

I've just been for a count up as 40 was an estimate i had earlier its now down to 36 so that saves around 1k.

Try contacting an HP reseller, such as CSE and see what they can do for a bundle. They can usually knock a good number off the price when you do that.

We have a pair of these, one in each server room linked with a 10gbps fibre. They have never let us down and deal with teaming extremely well...

I'm currently talking with A few plus my local supplier who tends to when it gets to big money items jump at the chance and tends to beat the big suppliers.

 

Also talking to 3 HP resellers.
