Anyone using Virgins 'Big Red' internet provision for their ISP? 100Mbps both ways with no contention looks like a good deal for a schools ISP.

We're thinking about changing over so I'd be interested in anyones opinion if they're using this or know some school/business that is.

It does look like a very tempting deal! Especially the 100mbps with no contention! I think we have 100mbps but shared with god knows how many other users!

I currently have a 10mb connection to LEA who then have a larger connection with 260mb designated to schools in our area but from the usage graphs its pretty much maxed out through out the school day!

I'm pretty sure our LEA has a 1gb link - but we're linked via 100mbps and of course sharing with lots of other schools. 100mbps all to yourself would certainly be a comparable service, and cheaper as well.

Oh my god, i've just seen the prices for this.

Effectively what the LEA are reselling at twice the price!

Swines

The bill you see in school from the LEA for the connection is not the true cost. LEA's up to now have been top slicing things like Harnessing Technology Grant to fiddle the price schools appear to pay. Now some of these grants are going, you may well find the LEA price escallating over the next couple of years.

London schools are going to get something similar as the LGfL has allegedly booted out Synetrix and signed up Virgin as their provider. By all accounts the price is similar but then you get all the LGfL stuff thrown in as well (e.g. out-of-date software packages, clumsy web filtering, incomprehensible interfaces, etc).

shame i'm not in a virgin area! although i've just emailed the to see what they do provide around here (although i'm 99% sure its nout!)

Their pricing for other services is still good.

Dedicated 100Mbps for 12k/yr is certainly available independent of Virgin in most of the UK as well - in fact, I'd bet that a number of members of this forum are paying a fair bit less than that too :)

I wouldn't say most of the UK ... there are quite a number of areas that don't have a chance of that. Even within the same county there are vast differences of what is available.

Not here it isn't.

Another LGfL school here ... we're currently on 100mbit which has a 2.35:1 contention or something silly - the newer Virgin service is 1:1...

If you know someone who can give me that speed for that price where I am in Rural Yorkshire I would be very pleased to see it, starting figures i've had are 15K for 10 on a 10 barer!

In non-Virgin world, its all about the Exchange. If you're in the middle of nowhere but still served by a half-decently-connected BT exchange a few miles away then there are definitely some good deals to be had :)
