shenley Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 has anyone on the bgfl network (ie Birmingham school) managed to get malwarebytes to update? The bgfl firewall is preventing this and I cannot workout why.
localzuk Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Have you set the proxy settings up in Malwarebytes, as it has its own settings rather than using the standard ones in IE/Windows? 1
CHR1S Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Have you set the proxy settings up in Malwarebytes, as it has its own settings rather than using the standard ones in IE/Windows? Nope, dont work with the proxy in either
Michael Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I've had the same problem too in the past. You can update the MalwareBytes rules manually here, however they only update it once a week. I downloaded a test and MalwareBytes reported it was 18 days out of date! Your only alternative is to either update it outside the BGFL network or use a 3G dongle. I suppose you could also raise a support call at: http://kb.link2ict.org/ but their turnaround is typically a few days. It really depends how quickly you need to perform a scan!
CHR1S Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Looks like it goes from port 51310 (possibly random) on the local pc to 8192 on the update server, I have logged the call with L2ICT and will update here once I get a reply.
peterp Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 If you update on a computer not connect to your firewalled system (home etc) and then copy the c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\malwarebytes\malwarebytes onto the machine you want to update.
shenley Posted March 3, 2011 Author Report Posted March 3, 2011 the malwarebytes forum mentions port 8192 connecting to data-cdn.mbamupdates.com and bgfl said we need to log a change request to have this port opened on the school firewall. However, when I updated this at home it connected to the update server via port 80, which should work within the school. What I don't want to do is raise a change request until I have a definite port number.
this_is_gav Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Not ideal, but there is a note in this thread of the MalwareBytes forum of an offline definition installer from MalwareBytes themselves. It's not updated daily, and the current one is a couple of weeks old, but it's better than having definitions months out of date and useful to have on a USB stick.
CHR1S Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Yep, change request and list of IPs for server(s), farce!
