ihaveaproblem Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Hi, Anyone had any luck disabling spell check on Office 2010? I've done a search and read the threads on the forums, however they all seem to be for older versions (2007, 2003) so the solutions aren’t working for me. I thought it would be a simple rename of msspell3.dll and setting permissions..... I can’t even find msspell3.dll in C:/programe files/common files/microsoft/proof I’ve tried setting deny access to the proofing folder, but when I do this it gives an error message when the group the deny permission are applied for when opening word etc. Anyone got any ideas? All help is much appreciated.
ihaveaproblem Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 Still looking for a way to do this. I resorted to uninstalling office and making the laptop use wordpad ( it's for a exam ) would like to keep office and find a way to do this however.
capncrunch Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I have asked a similar question and if there was away to turn it off in GPO but it can't be done from there either. We use custom exam accounts, which by default have spell check turned off in the options menu within word. Before the Exams the students are told that spell check is disabled and not many students have the nous to switch it back on and an Invigilator is always present so they would not be able to even if they knew how.
enjay Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 @capncrunch - how did you turn the spell check off? I've found a way of greying out various menus, so I reckon that by combining the two, we might have a solution...
sparkeh Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 You could achieve this by using the Office Customisation tool to create a .msp that just removed spellchecking completely. Target this at the machines in question and voila no spell check. Need to re-enable, create .msp to reinstall spell check!
enjay Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Far from ideal sparkeh (although I'm not beyond doing it) as we will be doing the Controlled Assessment in the main IT Suites, so I would like the spell checker to remain available for other users of the computers.
sparkeh Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Sorry if I am retreading old ground, but I just looked through the adm settings for 2010 and there are the following settings "Mark grammar errors as you type" and "Check grammar with spelling" Can't you create a group in AD for the exam participants and apply these settings via gpo?
enjay Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 No, those settings just relate to the grammar checker, not the spell checker. The issue would appear to be that MS have removed the "check spelling as you type" option and made it a standard part of Office, so that wiggly red line keeps appearing no matter what.
enjay Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Okay, I've got it folks - I've managed to disable the spell checker in Office 2010!! Go to disable proofing, spell checker, using GPO., follow Rex Zhang's instructions and then scroll down a bit for my comment and add the registry keys. Job done.
enjay Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I've just found that this isn't as fool-proof as we had hoped. Even with all these changes, users can still Alt+Click a word to open the thesaurus (looks like all we've done is disabled the toolbar button, not the thesaurus itself) and also right-click | synonyms. Anyone know of a way to prevent these?
Oaktech Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 we disabled the spelling and grammar functions at install for a specified set of exam laptops, and then changed folder permissions for the install folder to prevent them writing to the install folder thus preventing the automatic 'would you like to install this function' from running successfully.
enjay Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 No good for me, Oaktech, I need to do this on PCs which are otherwise "live" and ready for normal use.
Basford Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Has anyone had any success with this? I tried the recommended article from enjay but to know avail.
enjay Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 LSDWho has come up with a better answer than mine, as there were a few elements I'd missed - have a look at this post here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/office-software/72390-word-2010-exam-login-remove-right-click-context-menu.html#post788666 1
Achandler Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 You can remove read permissions to the spellcheck DLL if you are using exama ccounts, personally we use LibreOffice for students who arent allowed spellcheckers and remove all lniks to office files etc. 1
enjay Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 You can remove read permissions to the spellcheck DLL if you are using exama ccounts Not on 2010 you can't...
elsiegee40 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Isn't it simpler to remove microsoft office and make exam candidates use WordPad instead?
enjay Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Isn't it simpler to remove microsoft office and make exam candidates use WordPad instead? Absolutely. Unfortunately, some candidates require features which aren't present in WordPad, e.g. word count, tables, etc.

enjay Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Pen + Paper. Good thinking. If it was that simple, I'd have suggested that already :-)
Danp Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 We use this FREE Word Processor Based on Microsoft's WordPad Engine Word count, pages, headers and footers
