Oh well Vger we are of a similar age although I am 3 years older than you ....oops there goes my street cred (if ever I had one). Seems we were geeks before the word was thunked up :>)

They were great days, I got involved with amateur radio aged 13 and life went downhill after that. Time spent in the RN Signal School didn't help. All the services were offloading their old radio equipment and some of it was available in places like Proops in Tottenham Court Road for pennies - unless they understood what it was for.

Became disheartened with the move to commercialism without the knowledge - radio out of a box didn't seem like fun but it did get alot of people on the air.

That is what computers are about nowadays - buy a box fully loaded, plug in and away you go. As in the early days there are people who know how to take a box apart and find out what is wrong with it - and charge for the privelege.
